On Behalf of Marc Orbach:
Hans VanEtten, emeritus professor of Plant Pathology, passed away on Saturday August 1, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Hans joined the Plant Pathology Department in 1989, after a distinguished career at Cornell. He served as Head of Plant Pathology from 2000-2003. Hans is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in applying molecular techniques to disease physiology and for contributions to our understanding of the genetics of adaptation in filamentous fungi. He was a fellow of both the American Phytopathological Society as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Hans is recognized both for his research accomplishments as well as his ability to unify faculty, students and staff with Christmas parties, bowling events and softball games. He will be remembered through his many scientific progeny and collaborators. Those who worked with Hans all appreciate his mentorship, where he taught everyone to get the most out of science and life. He was passionate about his research, as well as his love of the Chicago Cubs, Bruce Springsteen and Wildcat athletics.
Hans is survived by his wife, Martha Hawes, Professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences at UA, and his daughters Laura of Tucson, and Erica of Ithaca, NY.
There will be a celebration of Hans' life at a later date. His obituary is in the Arizona Daily Star: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/tucson/obituary.aspx?pid=175430175
