Database Specialist
Posted 5 May 2014

The University of Arizona Herbarium is currently searching for a student worker (part-time) to assist with an ongoing project to database our collection of plant specimens. The Database Specialist will assist in updating and maintaining database software and the herbarium website, as well as entering and correcting information from plant specimen labels into an existing web-enabled collections database. The data entered becomes immediately available over the internet; great care is required to ensure that the information is entered accurately, and that errors in nomenclature or locality information are corrected at time of data entry.

Experience collecting botanical specimens or working with plant specimens is an asset for this work, but not required. Training in the use of the database, understanding basic botanical nomenclature, and interpreting plant specimen collection information will be provided.

Essential qualifications:
* Experience in programming and familiarity with databases (in particular php, mysql)
* Excellent organizational skills
* Attention to detail
* Accurate spelling
* Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision
* Available for approximately 10 hours/week

Preferred qualifications:
* Experience using Drupal or similar software
* Experience collecting plants or working with plant specimens
* Course work in plant taxonomy or other organism-level biology courses
* Work-study eligibility
