On Behalf of Dr. Michelle McMahon:
It is with sadness that I share that Dr. Charles T. Mason, Jr., former
Curator of the UA Herbarium, passed away earlier this month. Below is the AZ
Daily Star obituary in his honor. He was a tremendous influence on
generations of EEB and PLS systematics students as he taught courses and led
the UA Herbarium for almost 40 years. Please see below for memorial details.
Best to all,
Shelley

Charles T. Mason, Jr.
Professor Emeritus of Plant Sciences and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology,
University of Arizona, and former curator of the U of A Herbarium, died
suddenly on March 7, 2012. Born March 26, 1918 in Joliet, Illinois to
Charles T. Mason and Alfreda (Longley) Mason; survived by Patricia, his wife
of 68 years and son, C. Thomas Mason III. He earned a B.S. from University
of Chicago, and M.A. and Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. He
taught at the University of Arizona from 1953 to 1992, and continued to work
adjoining the Herbarium four-five days a week until he was injured in a
carpedestrian accident in 2007 at the age of 89. In 'retirement', he was a
co-editor of the compendious Vascular Plants of Arizona project, and
authored descriptions of ten plant families.
Throughout his life, he journeyed avidly throughout the U.S., Mexico, and
Canada. When Pat introduced him to travel beyond North America, one of his
greatest pleasures was visiting his former students in their countries
around the world. Chuck was active in Freemasonry for over half a century,
including serving as Master of Epes Randolph Lodge #32 and Grand Master of
the Grand Lodge of Arizona, and was awarded the honorary 33rd degree of the
Scottish Rite. Anyone interested in making a donation in his memory may
assist in supporting the University of Arizona Herbarium.

April 14, 2012, at 1:30 p.m., at ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME,
