Subject: Proposed Tobacco-Free AHSC Policy
A policy proposing a "smoke free" campus at the Arizona Health Sciences
Center, which comprises the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing and
Pharmacy, is under consideration. The policy can be viewed in its entirety,
along with the policy impact statement, at
<http://web.arizona.edu/~policy/index.html>
http://web.arizona.edu/~policy/index.html.
The Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC) at the University of Arizona is a
network of health-related organizations that work in collaboration to
provide health-care education, research, patient care and service to the
citizens of Arizona and their neighbors. The Tobacco-Free AHSC Policy will
promote and support a healthier community, conform to the mission of AHSC
and its affiliated entities, and align AHSC colleges with University of
Arizona Health Network entities. You may have read that the University of
Arizona Medical Center, a UAHN member, became a smoke-free facility on
January 1, 2012. While some UAHN employees work in UA facilities, so do UA
employees work in such areas as the University of Arizona Medical Center. As
we move forward with the integrated University of Arizona Healthcare
Network, it will be helpful to align our policies whenever reasonable and
possible. A tobacco-free approach is proposed because it sends a clear
message that the Arizona Health Sciences Center and the University of
Arizona Health Network support and encourage wellness and healthy behavior.
This approach eliminates ambiguity or confusion about what is or is not
allowed at AHSC on the parts of employees, students, visitors, contractors
and vendors.
In the spirit of shared governance and good policy-making, the developers of
the proposed policy are presenting it widely among members of the campus
community, soliciting comments and feedback from potential affected
stakeholders. Please send your comments by March 19, 2012 to: Dr. Scott
Leischow, Professor, Family and Community Medicine, at
sleischow at azcc.arizona.edu.
