On Behalf of Dr. Rod Wing:

October 21, 2011

Dear Plant Science and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Faculty,

About five years ago the Department of Plant Science set up a memorandum of
agreement (MOA) between the University of Arizona and Huazhong Agricultural
University (HZAU: http://www.hzau.edu.cn/en/home/), in Wuhan, China, to
establish the Shennong (the divine farmer) Center. The purpose of the
center is to perform collaborative research and training between the two
intuitions in Agriculture, Plant Biology and Evolution. Our key collaborator
is Professor Qifa Zhang (Chinese Academy of Science, and USA National
Academy of Science member) who runs the National Center of Plant Gene
Research (http://www2.ncpgr.cn/). Many of us have already established
active and productive collaborations with HZAU scientists. In order to
continue our relationship, and establish new interactions between HZAU and
UA, we plan to hold a 1½ day Bilateral Symposium at UA on January 12th and
13th. Below is a tentative agenda.

Wednesday, January 11th

Arrival

Thursday, January 12th

8-10 am: 8 short talks + questions (Alternating between HZAU and UA
speakers)

10-10:30: Coffee Break

10:30-12:30: 8 short talks + questions (Alternating between HZAU and UA
speakers)

12:30-2: Lunch

2-3:30 Breakout/Planning Discussions

3:30-5: Breakout /Planning Discussions

5-6:30: Rest

6:30-10pm: Dinner/Discussions

Friday, January 13th

8:30-9:30: Breakout/Planning Discussions

9:30-11: Wrap up/Future Directions/Farewell

11am: Transfer to airport

12:50-1:10 Southwest flight 1396 to San Diego

Participation in the Symposium is a great opportunity to establish important
international research and training collaborations in the areas of applied,
functional and evolutionary biology of crop plants, and related taxa. The
symposium is structured to have 16 short talks in the morning equally
divided between HZAU and UA faculty. Two Breakout/Planning sessions have
been created in order to match UA faculty with HZAU faculty with common
interested to begin to formulate plans for collaborative research and
scientific exchange. A list of the HZAU faculty members that will be
attending is provided below.

Please contact Carole Turner (carole at ag.arizona.edu) or me if you are
interesting in participating in this symposium. Faculty, Staff, Postdocs and
Graduate Students are all welcome.

Regards,

Rod
