Subject: Judith Carney on campus next week.
Hi,
Next week, world-famous scholar and long-time friend of SGD - Judith Carney
- will be giving a talk on campus, hosted by The School of Plant Sciences.
As you probably recall from her recent visit here in Geography, Carney's
research on trans-Atlantic food exchanges is rigorously historical,
theoretically sophisticated, and extremely widely-known ("Black Rice"
received a terrific revue in the NYTs). Her new book - "In the shadow of
slavery" - is a powerful extension of this earlier research.
The occasion of her visit is that our brothers and sisters in Plant Sciences
here on campus have recently generated a reference genome sequence of the O.
glaberrima genome - the West African Rice so central to Carney's story about
genetic and cultural exchange during the antebellum period.
That's a terrifically interesting connection across campus. Don't miss it!
Details of her talk are attached, but are appended here as well:

I'm afraid I'll be out of town, but I would strongly recommend this to
everyone.
