State Budget 2012 - How it Affects You

Special Edition of Arizona Spotlight airs on NPR 89.1FM/1550AM on Friday,
July 1, at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturday, July 2nd at 7 p.m.

TUCSON, AZ - June 28, 2011 - On the eve of the new fiscal year, "State
Budget 2012 - How it Affects You", a special edition of Arizona Spotlight
with guest hosts Christopher Conover and Andrea Kelly, explores the state
budget and its impact here in Southern Arizona. With interviews from the
people who crafted the budget, and those who must work within its limits,
the show aims to help you better understand our fiscal situation. The show
focuses on the state budget, and local agencies funded by the state, for the
fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012. It goes beyond the numbers to voices
from the community.

Kelly states; "Budget cuts can be hard to understand when all you hear about
are the numbers. This program highlights the voices of those impacted by
state budget cuts and shows how our community is affected. It also includes
the perspective of people who had to put the state budget together with
reduced funds, those who had to decide where to cut."

This special Arizona Spotlight program, "State Budget 2012 - How it Affects
You", includes interviews with:

*	Frank Antenori, Republican State Senator, Legislative District 30
*	Al Melvin, Republican State Senator, Legislative District 26
*	Wanda Howell, Chair UA Faculty Senate and UA professor of
nutritional sciences
*	Sandy Schiffman, Fourth grade teacher, Keeling Elementary School
*	Dr. James Dumbauld, Medical Director, St. Elizabeth's of Hungary
*	Sharon Bronson, Pima County Supervisor, District 3
*	Steve Kozachik, Tucson City Councilman, Ward 6

The two state senators who helped craft the state budget explain how and why
they made the funding decisions they did. The University of Arizona is
managing its reduced budget while trying as much as possible not to impact
students and class offerings.
An elementary school teacher explains what state budget cuts mean in her
classroom. Two local elected officials say they struggle to meet residents'
needs when state funding goes down. An example: State cuts mean less money
for road repairs. Health programs are also struggling. One Tucson community
health center lost its share of $50 million in state taxes, and funding was
cut for the developmentally disabled.
