Subject: Invitation to hear deliberations of the National Science Board at
the UA on Sept. 13, 2011

August 29, 2011

Dear Members of the UA Research Community,

The National Science Board, which governs the National Science Foundation
and advises the President and Congress on issues relating to science and
engineering policy, research, and education, holds one of its meetings each
year at a university. This year, they have chosen to come to the UA. Their
meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 8:00 am - 12:00 noon, in the Catalina
Room of the Student Union.

UA faculty, as well as research staff and students, are invited to sit in
the audience for any portion of the meeting, to get a first-hand glimpse of
how the NSB operates. This is a special opportunity to get an inside view,
as Board members discuss educational programs aimed at increasing the
diversity of students pursing degrees in STEM areas, NSF support of
facilities and mid-scale research, merit review, and data policies. Please
note that no comments or questions from the audience will be entertained by
the Board. This is simply an opportunity to observe.

I urge you to take advantage of this rare opportunity, if you have an
interest in the National Science Foundation or in national science and
engineering policy.

Sincerely,

Leslie Tolbert, Vice President for Research
