Freshman Emmy Adams of Las Vegas dines in the UA Student Union's newest restaurant, Sabor. The student center is also adding a new yogurt spot and will revamp patios.

A lot has changed during the University of Arizona's summer break. Here's what you need to know about new faces and places on campus.

New leaders

• President - Eugene Sander, longtime agriculture dean, postponed retirement to be the interim president until a replacement for Robert Shelton is hired.

• Provost - Senior Vice President Jacqueline Mok will take on multiple roles in administration, including duties of the provost, until the UA replaces Meredith Hay.

• Dean of the Eller College of Management - Len Jessup, an entrepreneurship expert, was hired from Washington State University.

• Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences - Shane Burgess, a leader in genomics sciences, was hired from Mississippi State University.

• Dean of the College of Optical Sciences - A new dean is expected to be hired this month. Dean James Wyant is retiring to return to his work in the industry.

• Head of the School of Journalism - David Cuillier, who studies and advocates for freedom of information, takes over as interim head while Jacqueline Sharkey returns to the faculty. The search for a new head of the school is in progress.

New dorms on Sixth Street

• Árbol de la Vida is home to 719 honors students at North Euclid Avenue.

• Likins Hall is home to 369 students at North Highland Avenue.

New construction

• Arizona Stadium

Sixth Street near Arizona Stadium is down to one lane each way as crews finish the new scoreboard and video board, which should be ready for the first football game on Sept. 3.

• Student unions

Three restaurants are changing at the Student Union Memorial Center. Sabor, a fast-casual Mexican restaurant with a salsa bar, replaces Cafe Sonora. Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt will go in where Boost used to be. And a renovation of Panda Express is under way.

During new happy hour events, students can find deals, sometimes getting a meal for $4.

Also in the works are projects to renovate the north-side patios, expand the U-Mart and relocate the information desk.

At the Park Student Union, a pizza place has been replaced by La Petite Patisserie, a grab-and-go French pastry shop with a coffee and smoothie bar.

• Bryant Bannister Tree Ring Building

Construction will begin this semester on a new building that will stretch over the top of the math building. The math classes and nearby dorms will get a heads-up about noise.

• Coronado Hall

The '60s-era dorm with the reputation as a party place will be closed all year for major redo of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and bathroom upgrades.

• Hillel Foundation

The growing center for Jewish life on campus has renovated its building, 1245 E. Second St., to double the size of the Oy Vey Café and add more lounge space. A new construction project will add 50 percent more space to the center with a new wing with more multipurpose spaces and classrooms.

New branch

UA Downtown officially opens for classes, including courses in landscape architecture.

Grand opening event

• When: 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10

• Where: 44 N. Stone Ave.

• What: See exhibits and demonstrations, talk with students and researchers, and visit the UA BookStore and library branches.

New bachelor's degree programs

• General studies

• Global studies

• Environmental studies

• Intelligence studies at UA South

• Early childhood education at UA South

New graduate certificate, master's degree or Ph.D. programs

• Government and public policy (master's and Ph.D.)

• International security (master's)

• Stage and screen studies (master's)

• Cellular and molecular medicine (master's and Ph.D.)

• 11 new graduate certificate programs, including heritage conservation, administration and management of American Indian natural resources, Judaic studies, five special topics in education and three in health care

New parking meters

Problem: Hundreds of parking meters on campus and no change in your pocket.

Solution: The UA got rid of about 400 parking meters in favor of solar-powered digital-payment kiosks. Now you can pay for parking with a card, including a UA Cat Card. Time can be added from any pay machine, even one that's all the way across campus from your car.

Coming soon: UA Parking and Transportation Services is working on a way to pay for parking using a cellphone.
