Campus Motorist Assistance: No Need to Panic
Description: Parking logo
The UA's Motorist Assistance Program offers free jump starts, lockout service and help with a flat tire to any campus motorist by calling 520-621-AUTO (2886).
By Rebecca Ruiz-McGill, University Communications, August 17, 2011
A team of 13 enforcement officers and safety specialists are on call during peak hours to provide free motorist assistance to anyone in need on the UA campus.
The increase in traffic flow and hectic pace of the beginning of each new semester on the University of Arizona campus is a time when motorists may lock their keys in the car and cars may overheat or batteries die. Should this happen to you, don't panic.
The UA's Parking and Transportation Services <http://parking.arizona.edu/> offers the Motorist Assistance Program free of charge to aid any campus motorist, providing jump starts, lockout service or help with a flat tire. To access this service, all it takes is a phone call to 520-621-AUTO (2886).
The service, available since the mid-1980s, can save drivers time, money and frustration as well as keep traffic flowing on campus at a steady pace.
MAP, the Motorist Assistance Program <http://parking.arizona.edu/assistive/> , is a free service provided by the Parking and Transportation Services Parking Enforcement Section, a team of 13 enforcement officers and safety specialists who are on call to help any driver in need within the UA boundary.
Enforcement officers show up within five to 10 minutes of the call in golf carts or pickups, armed with a tool kit and booklet with instructions for how to open locks on various makes, models and years of vehicles. They also carry a portable battery pack for jumpstarts and air compressors for minor, temporary flat repairs.
MAP service is available during peak University times on the following schedule:
* Fall/Winter: (mid-August through mid-May)
7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Friday
* Summer Break Schedule: (mid-May through mid-Aug)
7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday
Service is not available during University holidays or on weekends.
New to the program, said Joyce Childers, program coordinator and dispatcher, is the emergency ride home service, when all else fails.
"The emergency ride home service used to apply only to campus employees, but now it is open to anyone," Childers said.
Last year, MAP provided assistance to 602 people, but in previous years, it helped more than twice that number, attesting to motorists using their own vehicle assistance programs or to motorists not being aware of the campus service.
"We have many repeat customers, and that's OK, we are here to help," Childers added.
Campus motorists can obtain the MAP benefits card and key reminder with phone number and program features at any UA parking garage or at the parking and transportation office.
