RE: Excellence Amidst Change
DATE: August 9, 2011
As we search for a new president to lead the University of Arizona, I would
like to take this opportunity as chair of the Arizona Board of Regents to
welcome Dr. Eugene Sander in his new role, and to express my personal
appreciation to Dr. Robert Shelton for his leadership over the last five
years. On behalf of the Regents, I especially want to express my sincere
gratitude to each member of the UA faculty and staff for your scholarship
and service, and to encourage your input as we search for a new president
for the UA.
The UA continues on its trajectory of international respect as a leading
public research university. From securing the largest grant in NASA's
history, record enrollment, statewide outreach and service, to excellence on
the athletic fields, the UA is a true state gem. Most importantly, the
strength of our world-class faculty and the focus on excellence across the
university has made this success possible.
The Board of Regents is keenly aware that the selection of a university
president is one of our most important responsibilities. The UA's academic
and research base, exemplary faculty, and diverse student body will attract
the best available talent giving us the opportunity to select the best
person for the position.
I have asked Regents Dennis DeConcini and Rick Myers to co-chair the
Regents' Search Committee and to solicit input from key constituencies
throughout the presidential search process. They have appointed a 23-member
Regents' Search Committee and are in the process of appointing an Advisory
Council to assist the committee in obtaining additional input on the search.
The Search Committee will hold open discussions to gather input regarding
the leadership characteristics most important for us to consider. The search
process will be completed no later than late next spring-early summer. The
Regents are seeking a strong leader who is willing to meet the challenges
unique to Arizona and the UA and who will bring innovative ideas to guide a
major, public research university in providing a high-quality learning
environment, advancing its ambitious research goals and agenda, managing
through difficult fiscal times, and leveraging the university to make a
major positive difference in Arizona.
Throughout this transition, we can all trust in the university's world-class
research, service, and academics -- the true hallmarks of the UA established
through generations of dedicated presidents, faculty, staff and students.
Information about the search is available on-line at www.azregents.edu by
clicking on the UA Presidential Search icon on the homepage. Questions or
comments about the search may be sent to UASearch at azregents.edu.
