<span style="font-size:11pt">It is with great pleasure and pride that I announce the appointment of Shirley Tarawali as the new chair of GASL - <a href="http://www.livestockdialogue.org/" target="_blank">the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock</a>. She takes over from
 Fritz Schneider, who has held the position since 2017 and has been instrumental in transforming GASL into the mature multi-stakeholder partnership it is today.

<span style="font-size:11pt">Shirley brings to this prestigious role 35 years of in-depth experience in livestock, progressively leading ILRI first in farm research in crop livestock systems in West Africa, followed by her leadership in the areas of animal
 nutrition and natural resource management and, finally, as assistant director general. In all of these roles, she has been an active advocate for sustainable livestock, through ILRI and more recently through the Global Livestock Advocacy for Development (<a href="https://whylivestockmatter.org/about-us/" target="_blank">GLAD</a>)
 program, finding strategic ways to bridge research and science with development and private-sector actors.</span></p>

<span style="font-size:11pt">Shirley was one of three final candidates from a shortlist of 15 high-level global applicants. Last Thursday, during GASL’s annual multi-stakeholder partnership meeting, she participated in a 2-hour debate where she demonstrated
 that she is indeed the right person to lead GASL over the next two years. Shirley proposes to expand GASL’s membership and further advance its agenda of ensuring that livestock is part of the solution in building resilient food systems, facing climate change
 challenges and contributing to sustainable development goals. </span></p>
