As living in Iran. we have tow kinds of livestock rearing categories and even three.</font></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><font size="3">1- Those who keep livestock and move between certain summer and winter rangelands through a certain corridor. We call them Ashayer in Iran as used in Arabic. Each Ashayer family belong to a tribal hierarchy. In this system the families also move with the herd. we can call them Mobile pastoralist but in English perhaps you name them as Nomad. But nomads do not have any certain summer/ winter /corridor and they move arround in search of fodder and water and escape harsh weather.<br></font></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><font size="3">There is a sub category that can be the same as the term transhumance. Pastoralists or shepherds move flocks of livestock between summer/winter /corridor rangelands but families do not accompany the herds/flocks of livestock. Mainly shephers and livestock owner are with herds.</font></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><font size="3">An other sub category is that duing winter time herders are living in villages and surrounding rangelands and just in spring and summer time they move out of village. They are called semi-mobile or semi-transhumant pastoralists.</font></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><font size="3">2- The last category are those people living in villages and keep some livestock and rearing livestock is usually a subsidary and not main income generating activities. They are mainly crop producers. Part of them used to be Ashayer and moved with their livestock but due to hardships or other personal preferences they have decided to settle in villages.</font></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><font size="3"><br></font></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><font size="3">In brief, pastoralists are those who rear livestock and their flocks are dependent mainly ( if not completely ) relying on range forage. Thanks Jurgen for raising this issue. I agree with Ann that many terms are used for pastoralists around the world. As David Phelps said, pastoralists is really only used in one state in Australia, we also use grazier and farmer; with farmer probably the most
commonly used term. Of course, in Australia pastoralists do not tend to move their livestock as a regular activity. </div>

includes all the different types of pastoralists in different countries which, in English, may also be known as “ranchers” (USA) or “graziers” (Australia). Indeed, the Australians also use the term pastoralist - see wikipedia referring to Australia "</font>The
owner of a station is called a pastoralist or a grazier ( which corresponds to the North American term "rancher").<span class="ydp2b65bcd3yiv8355616026" style="font-size:small;"> Some people also use the word “herder”, who would also be regarded as part of the pastoralist
group, but this word refers - strictly speaking - to the people actually doing the herding (family members or hired) and would not include the other members of pastoralist families who take on other tasks in the production and livelihood system. Although,

The COAG Secretariat has already received several letters of support or commitment, including from some pastoralist organisations and networks in Africa, CentralAsia, Europe, the Middle East and South America, but more letters would give more weight to the
