I hope you are all very well and I’d like to thank you to attract attention to IUCN motion 8 on rangelands and pastoralism!   As IUCN members and Commission members can comment on motions online, I have done so for your motion 8, which is well written and strong, and connects well with motion 138, as I have noted.  Let me now most kindly encourage you to offer comments for motion 138:  Recognising unequivocally and effectively supporting the crucial conservation role of territories of life and their custodians.   It is very simple to find it. From https://iucncongress2025.org/assembly/motions, go to motion 138 , which some of our colleagues in Latin America had to fight hard to get included… and please add some comments before the deadline of tomorrow evening!   😊

Thank you for your responses.

And dear Khalid, thank you for your suggestions.

Due to the word limits set for both the preamble and operative paragraphs, we were unable to include all relevant global policy decisions or important topics that could be reflected in the motion. We therefore prioritized those policy decisions that make direct reference to the IYRP.

As mentioned earlier, the motion is now open for IUCN Members, National Committee representatives, and Commission members to express support, raise concerns, or propose amendments via the IUCN Congress online platform. From this point on, each motion will be moderated by facilitators appointed by IUCN.

I kindly encourage you and other IYRP Global Alliance members to share your suggestions through the above-stated official platform—either directly or via your partners who are IUCN Members (organisations) or Commission members (individuals)—as this is the only channel through which inputs can be made.

Thank you for sharing the motion—we truly appreciate all the effort you’ve put into this.

I’d like to suggest including explicit recognition of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), adopted at COP 15 in December 2022. The framework acknowledges Indigenous Peoples and local communities as custodians of biodiversity and essential partners in its conservation, restoration, and sustainable use.

Additionally, I believe IUCN should monitor its members' compliance with these principles. Many harmful conservation projects involve agencies that are IUCN partners, and it’s crucial that they adhere to IUCN’s charter, commitments, and ethical standards.

What are your thoughts on these additions?

We are pleased to inform you that the motion titled “Conservation and sustainable management of rangelands and pastoralism”, for which we at Yolda Initiative led the drafting process, has been accepted without any changes by the IUCN Motions Working Group, following a technical review of its scientific and technical content. It is one of only 109 motions accepted out of 200 submitted.

The motion directly refers to the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) and highlights the role of our Alliance.

We are deeply grateful to our IUCN Member partners who submitted the motion:
