Subject: Success at UNCCD!
Hello all,
Many of you may know already but in case you may have missed the news - I am happy to share that the UNCCD passed a decision on rangelands and pastoralists. I am attaching the decision here.
Watch the plenary discussion on rangelands and grasslands on Dec 6 from 02:10:00 here - https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k10/k10jgqd9ms
The COP was really abuzz with events and discussions on rangelands and pastoralists. Many organisations had an inclusive approach, putting pastoralists at the centre of work within the rangelands and therefore the submission on "grasslands and rangelands" became the decision on "rangelands and pastoralists".
The decision does mention land tenure in line with the VGGT but does not unpack what that means. The decision does approach the issue from the perspective of rangelands and there is scope to more explicit recognise the contributions of pastoralists as well as mention collective tenure, shared lands and mobility.
The decision also gives a nod to the IYRP and is key to follow up in the COP17 which will coincide with the IYRP celebrations in Mongolia. IYRP was well represented in all the key spaces with all three co-chairs of the global alliance present.
There was also a side event on "The Road to the IYRP2026" held in the Food and Agriculture Pavilion where many of us took part and it can be viewed here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZTvXTyIPtk&t=7s
A summary is available here - https://www.cgiar.org/news-events/news/rangelands-sustaining-livelihoods-cultures-and-ecosystems-cgiar-and-partners-gear-up-for-the-international-year-of-pastoralists-and-rangelands-iyrp-2026/
Happy holidays,
Natasha
