Indeed, Maryam!

You have been an inspiring Chair, and -- in truth -- an inspiring person throughout all these years...

Warmest thanks and wishes for all you care about,

Dear Maryam

Thank you for your message that you will be stepping down as Co-chair of the IYRP ISG. Your leadership of this idea has been inspirational. >From a suggestion in 2016 from some of us involved in rangelands through the Society for Range Management, the Rangelands Partnership and The International Rangeland Congress that we should advocate for the UN to designate an International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists you showed leadership and worked hard with determination to make this idea come true. I recall meetings and discussions in the early days on the fringes of UNEA in Nairobi and the efforts to get governments to support the initiative. It has been a long journey, we made it together, but we could not have made it without you.

Of course your interest and dedication to rangelands and pastoralists goes back a long time – right back to the days of your PhD in the 1980s.

Once again thank you so much for your leadership in ensuring the IYRP will happen in 2026.

Best Wishes

Iain

Many thanks, Maryam, for your work as co-chair during all these years and for your insightful paper on NP.

In effect we are right now, some of us, in New Delhi discussing of pastoral issues with Greta Semplici, Saverio Kratli and others.

There many routes to follow and to share.

Kind regards.

Warmly,

Letizia

Dear IYRP friends

After many years of being part of steering the IYRP ISG Coalition, I would like to inform you that I have stepped down as Co-Chair. Thank you all for your support and encouragement. We are now searching for a replacement and if you are interested, please contact Co-Chair Igshaan Samuels.

I also take this opportunity to bring to your attention this short opinion in the White Horse Press which is reproduced from the Special Issue of Nomadic Peoples entitled ‘Sedentist Biases in Law, Policy and Practic’, edited by Greta Semplici and Cory Rodgers. The whole issue (and all 2023 content) and is published Open Access thanks to the ‘Subscribe to Open’ project for NP.

Mobility has many different shapes around the world. At a time when migration of peoples (more popularly known as immigration) generates so much passion and debate, let us not confuse it with "mobility", that is, the tradition, science and art of being on the move as a response and adaptation to natural variability in our environment.
