Dear Ann,
Congratulations for your course! As I read the announcement, the attached paper by M. Taghi Farvar on the myths affecting mobile pastoralism clearly came to mind... We published it in IUCN CEESP <https://portals.iucn.org/library/sites/library/files/documents/Policy-Matters-Issue-12.pdf> Policy Matters no 12, about twenty years ago, when speaking in favour of pastoralists in the world of conservation was unwelcomed... to use an euphemism. Thanks to people like you, Taghi and many others, the situation has changed now more than I would have imagined possible. Thanks for all you continue doing… and best wishes!
Grazia

Subject: [IYRPsupportgroup] New (free) MOOC on "Pastoralism in development" to be launched in Jan 2023!
Dear all,
Below is a message from David Pertaub of the International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED) about their new (free) MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on "Pastoralism in development”, which will be launched on 30 January 2023. Enrolment opens on 10 January - see https://www.iied.org/pastoralism-development-learning-journey-free-massive-open-online-course-mooc
This MOOC is fully in line with the spirit and purpose of the IYRP, as it provides arguments to correct many of the still prevailing misconceptions and misunderstandings about pastoralism.
Please share this announcement widely.
Wishing you a happy holiday season and all the best in 2023!
Ann
IIED is pleased to announce the forthcoming launch of <https://www.iied.org/mooc-pastoralism-development-online-learning-journey> Pastoralism in development, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) funded by Misereor.
Although specialist understanding of pastoralism has improved substantially over the last two decades, progress is slow. All too often, learning about pastoralism - even in higher education - is from perfunctory and often outdated information at the margin of courses concerned with different topics. The MOOC Pastoralism in development is designed to address this gap head on and provides an accessible entry point for understanding pastoralism - and a valuable tool for critically assessing knowledge on this topic!
The course starts on 30 January 2023 and will run for three weeks. It consists of three distinct modules with clear milestones, practical exercises for self-learning, and discussions and conversations facilitated by tutors. Participants will receive a certificate of completion for the course provided they meet the relevant requirements.
‘The approach taken in this MOOC is extremely thought-provoking and dispels many of the long prevailing myths about pastoralism. The course is a must not only for young students of pastoralism but also for people who have been working in dryland research and development for many years, as it stimulates them to question their own assumptions.’
Dr Ann Waters-Bayer, Agrecol Association, Germany / CELEP (Coalition of European Lobbies for Eastern African Pastoralism)
Please put the date in your calendar so you do not miss your chance to join the course. And please do spread the word about the <https://www.iied.org/mooc-pastoralism-development-online-learning-journey> MOOC to colleagues and friends who might be interested or benefit from it.
We look forward to welcoming you (or your colleagues) online on 30 January.
Best wishes,
David Paul Pertaub
