Dear all,
Here is a short update from this afternoon’s final discussion on the proposal to establish a COAG Subcommittee on Livestock (SC-L).
Maria Helena Semedo, FAO, reported that FAO improved the ToRs and now uses the same language as the SC on Aquaculture. They clarified the scope of the SC-L: a forum for consultation and discussion on all matters related to livestock, i.e. all terrestrial animals used for food and agriculture (including bees). A couple of tasks were added, such as to advise on preparation of technical reviews, on mechanisms to implement action programmes and on strengthening international collaboration. The SC is an advisory body, not a decision-making body, and will report to the COAG. It was clarified that all member nations of COAG may be members of the SC (not only regional participation), and they should notify the DG of their interest in being members.
The COAG invited the FAO Council in December 2020 and the FAO Conference in 2021 to endorse the SC-L.
(This is probably the path that also the proposal for the IYRP will take.)
Ann
