Subject: Re: [IYRPsupportgroup] Pastoralists as family farmers: some more details
Dear Ann.
Thank you. Very good article!
I have following comments for its future improvements :
In the section 2.”Importance of Pastoralism..” can be added: In Mongolia one-third of the national labor force was employed in pastoral agriculture and comprised 24 percent of its GDP. Mongolian herders, as “family pastoralists” , where more than 167 thousand herders’s households has with average of 390 herds per one herder’s family.
In the section 3. Some specifics: can be added: “ Mobility is core and base for pastoral agriculture..”
In the section 4.on Change land tenure: “Pastoral lands as CPR need clear tenure system including contractual arrangements in coexisting with existing customary institutional structure of common resources management at local level”
In this section on Increasing insecurity : “ Climate change and desertification with increased evidence of extreme climate conditions makes also more insecure family pastoralists”
In the section the “loss of traditional know..”: add “in many countries of Central Asia the loss of traditional knowledge negatively contributing on family pastoralism”

Dear all,
Here is now a 10-pager which is meant to complement the earlier 4-page brief. This longer paper is written for people involved in promoting and supporting family farming who might be interested in delving a bit deeper to gain a better understanding of pastoralists as family farmers.
The paper outlines: i) features of pastoralists that identify them as family farmers; ii) the importance of pastoralists for the wellbeing of nations, people and the environment; iii) specificities of pastoral farming systems; iv) major challenges and emerging opportunities for pastoralists; and v) how pastoralists’ issues could be incorporated into policy advocacy activities during the Decade of Family Farming.
This longer paper (plus the 4-pager brief) can be found on the CELEP website: http://www.celep.info/pastoralists-as-family-farmers/ - sorry, the 10-pager is available only in English.
The Spanish version of the 4-pager is still in the making but will be posted soon on the CELEP website.
Cheers,
Ann

Dear all,
To mark the beginning of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019–28, the Coalition of European Lobbies for Eastern African Pastoralism (CELEP) combined forces with the International Land Coalition (ILC) Rangelands Initiative and the International Support Group (ISG) for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) in bring out a 4-page brief “Pastoralists as family farmers” in English and French (attached).
In the definition of family farmers for the International Year of Family Farmers (IYFF) in 2014 and now for the Decade of Family Farming, pastoralists are mentioned as a group requiring specific attention. Despite this recognition, most statements, papers and information about family farmers refer primarily to small-scale crop farmers. CELEP, ILC and the ISG – as organisations supporting, working with or representing pastoralists – seek to draw attention to the importance of including pastoralists within discussions and interventions in family farming, including in the current Decade.
Please share this brief with people involved in promoting and supporting family farming.
Cheers,
Ann
