This to let you know that during the Beating Famine in the Sahel conference, 26-28 February 2019, https://beatingfamine.com/ . IUCN with the support of VSF, SNV and CILSS run a session on rangelands regeneration and pastoralism. Explicit advocacy was made concerning IYRP not only during the session but during the plenary session as well. More than 420 people from Government bodies, Inter-governmental bodies, International Organizations, NGOs, CBOs, Research institutions, Private sector... were represented.

Recommendation made by the session on rangelands restoration and pastoralism are as following:

1-     We recommend that governments, civil society organizations, international organizations be mobilized for the proclamation of an International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists by the United Nations.

2-     We recommend that ministries in changes of land tenure in countries effectively implement pastoral land policies to protect pastoral lands and rangelands, and to facilitate and strengthen pastoral mobility.

3-     We recommend that governments, investors and donors increase investment in support of sustainable rangeland management and sustainable pastoralism in the Sahel.

4-     Rangelands restoration around the world is poorly reflected in current restoration initiatives and commitments. We recommend that governments, the Rio conventions, international organizations place rangeland restoration and pastoral community development at the heart of policies and programs to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).organizers during the conference.

Yes we know that all these recommendations will not appear in the overall recommendations of the conference as they are since the overall recommendations will be a synthesis of all recommendations from the various and many sessions. However, as far as the mentioned issues are discussed during the conference, it's a great step towards mobilizing the many other actors around IYRP.

Barbara and colleagues have made some great posters that we are getting printed for the event - see attached. We could not include everyrthing in the posters and all photos, and had to keep them simple to allow for quick design and printing. But we have also collected some great photos from our colleagues to use to future designs.

ILRI, ILC and others will have communications people there.

Updated draft agenda attached - and we will continue to keep you informed.
