Congrats to all who have worked so tirelessly on getting this done. Initially, there were few of us who had any idea of the complexity of getting this designation or the amount of time, coalition building and hard work that would be required. Now I look in awe at the monumental task that has borne fruit and can only thank the many people it has taken to achieve what is sure to bring attention to the issues and needs of rangelands around the world and the people who depend on them for survival.
Hats off you who have had part!

It is with a distinct pleasure that I can inform you that today, the UN General Assembly formally designated 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists!

Our sincere thanks to the Government of Mongolia for leading the way, to FAO for their steadfast support, and to all of you who have supported this process through the long journey. In the end 67 other governments formally joined with Mongolia to co-sponsor this resolution.

Now the hard work really begins: We have 4 years to design, prepare and implement a spectacular and impactful IYRP 2026!
