[Iyrp-gcg] WG on pastoralism and GHG emissions - Call for interest

Hello Pablo,

Thank you for this remark.

The idea is not to split the Climate Change WG. Maybe Habibou could join it
and propose something specifically on methane emissions (like a short
position paper), by gathering some researchers working on that?

It’s only an idea and, since it’s not my scientific field, it may be not
relevant…

<mailto:jonathantilstonedavies at gmail.com> @Jonathan Davies What do you
think about that? Would it be possible to make the link between Habibou and
the Climate Change WG?

Best,

Serena

Hi Serena and Habibou,

I would like to ask what the differences would be with the agenda of the
current Pastoralism & Climate Change working group (CC WG) would be. Is
Habibou suggesting to split the mitigation and adaptation components into
two different WGs, thus "emptying" the current CC group on the mitigation
component? In that case, I think the current CC WG would need a name change.

For a mitigation WG, I would not focus exclusively on emissions. There are
aspects on carbon stocking, and changes in radiative force under pastoralist
vs. abandoned landscapes (via differences in albedo, or in longevity of GHG
in the atmosphere due to competition with CH4 for atmospheric sinks) that
should be included there.

Cheers

Pablo

Dear members of the GCG-IYRP,

I would like to introduce Habibou Assouma, a colleague from CIRAD
<https://www.cirad.fr/en> based in Burkina Faso and working on livestock
GHG emissions – some of you may know him, see for instance this article:
https://theconversation.com/au-sahel-maintenir-lelevage-pastoral-pour-sadapter-au-changement-climatique-106808

He would like to set up a global-level working group on this topic –
pastoralism and GHG emissions – and I proposed to him that we go through our
GCG.

With this email, I would like to know if anyone within our group is
interested in being involved in this WG: Habibou could be the coordinator
together with another person.

Best wishes,

Serena
