Though in some places it would be appropriate to include cultural identity as well e.g. ecology, land use and culture define the Maasai steppe…..
…Might need to separate primary use and secondary use….e.g. not sure we can categorise sheep on cereal plains as “rangelands”….but this can be discussed.

what you are suggesting, seems like an excellent idea for me.
What kind of mapping are you thinking of?

Something like we did for the LPP publication in Spain?
In this publication (hereafter) you can find a map we did for Spain, on the main kinds (very generalised) of rangeland in Spain (of course inside each category,, there are lots of differences!!!)

I add the map in detail in different modalities, might be, this is what you are thinking of for all countries?

I would like to propose a new working group and that is one on developing a new rangelands basemap – the idea is to end up with a map of different categories of rangelands types with types defined based on ecology, land use and cultural identities. Not quite sure yet how we will get there, but probably have to work on a country level with country-level (or regional) teams categorizing the different types of rangelands and approximate distributions of these across a country/region.

Perhaps this can be discussed in the GCG meeting.
