Hi there,
Please find some comments attached. I didn’t have time to go through in detail but skimmed it and made some comments where particular things stood out.  Congratulations on bringing this together – a significant piece of work. However…. (😉)

I made some comments in the text. But overall I found it very dense and don’t think that any policy-maker is going to read it as it is. The text is a bit of a mix of broad statements and more specific trains of thought which then get disturbed by another broad statement added.  It feels like you are wanting to include all and everything about pastoralism and rangelands here. Important statements on degradation/restoration get lost in heavy text paragraphs. By mid-way it is getting quite repetitive.  Some parts are well beyond the focus/remit of UNCCD/CRIC/LDN….And the result is a long shopping list of demands. I suggest it would be more effective if you really just focus in on degradation (and restoration) aspects given the topic/target-audience of the review.  I would really focus in on what is 100% important/necessary for the messages you want to present.

I like the diagram on page 20 which provides a nice summary and I think you could do with more of these kind of figures and less dense text. Having said that this I would have anticipated seeing a figure on multifunctionality of rangelands here not on multiple benefits so suggest moving this diagram upfront and putting in a diagram on multifunctional rangelands.

Given that invasive species are one of the biggest problems for pastoralists/rangelands I was very surprised to see it only mentioned once in passing  – this is one of MAJOR degradation problems but I see no attention to it – advise to have a section/point focused on this.

Also I saw use of a lot of old references – would be good if you can find more recent references. And there are some references that are importantly incorrect – see incorrect reference to IGAD’s Protocol on Regulation of Transboundary Pastoralism (2017)….. It should be the Protocol on Transhumance 2020 https://icpald.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/IGAD-PROTOCOL-ON-TRANSHUMANCE-Final-Endorsed-Version.pdf

Some more specific comments in the text.

An important document and process but I find it way too heavy, dense and overdemanding…..and could do with some streamlining and strong focusing if we want policy-makers/decision-makers to read, take notice and action.

Dear GCG members

Please find attached for your approval the full report ("Science Review") and its 2-page Executive Summary, created by the IYRP LDN Working Group. Among other activities planned, these will be used as documentation for a High Level Event being proposed for the UNCCD CRIC 21 in October 2023.

The purpose of the Science Review is to collect relevant and up to date information about rangelands, pastoralism specifically in the context of the UNCCD's mandate, which includes dryland management, drought, and Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). The Working Group has identified 8 priority actions that could make up a formal Decision by the UNCCD COP in either 2024 or 2026.

With your approval, we will then circulate the report to the full IYRP ISG list and other experts for peer review. It also has to undergo a final edit. The full report will be published (we are in the process of identifying a publisher, therefore all suggestions are welcome).

I would like to sincerely thank all the members of the LDN Working Group (copied here), who have diligently worked hard to pull together this rather comprehensive Review. It is relevant to many of the 12 themes of the IYRP and I am sure we can extract key messages from it for our efforts in 2026.

Please concentrate your comments (in track changes) on substantive issues and content, and less on edits.

Kindly provide your approval/objection by 12th May 2023.
