The International Year of Camelids (IYC) 2024 will be officially launched
on *4 December 2023 at 12:30 CET*. The launch event aims to raise awareness
and create momentum for IYC 2024 by engaging FAO Members and other relevant
stakeholders.



Bactrian camels, dromedary camels, llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and guanacos
play a crucial role in the livelihoods of millions of families,
particularly Indigenous peoples and local communities, residing in arid and
semi-arid lands and highlands across the globe. The #YearOfCamelids will
highlight the contribution of camelids to food security, economic growth,
livelihoods, culture, nutrition and sustainable agrifood systems. But
there’s more! The year aims to enhance public and policymakers'
understanding of the significant role camelids play in preserving
ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and building resilience to climate
change.



This launch event will take place at the *Sheikh Zayed Centre* (FAO
headquarters) and will be web streamed
<https://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/item/6402/icode/> so people around the
world can follow it virtually. All HQ colleagues are welcome to join the
event, while registration to watch the event virtually is not required.
