<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0">Graduate education continues to be a vital component of the CALS instructional mission. While undergraduate degrees and courses across the college have received considerable and very visible attention in recent years,
we've also been working to develop support strategies to revitalize and expand our graduate programs. Perhaps the most notable example of increased financial support is the expanded program for CALS central funding of graduate student Teaching Assistants
(TAs) in general education and service courses. We are also rolling out in Fall 2019 a new program that guarantees CALS central funding of 1st-year PhD students for all CALS units that agree to fund those students in years 2 through 4 of their degree program. </p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0"><br>
</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0">Both of these programs emerged from a series of roundtable discussions with CALS academic unit heads and graduate program coordinators over the past two years that produced the "Five Principles" document for graduate
education in CALS. <span style="font-size: 12pt;">I want to extend my deep gratitude to Prof. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Kirsten Limesand for chairing the Graduate Education Task Force that has guided these important additions to CALS graduate
programs. Prior to the Task Force, CALS did not have a unifying vision for graduate education across our 40+ graduate degrees and certificate programs. Now we do.</span></p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br>
</span></p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">But our work is only beginning. Consequently, I'm very pleased to announce that, effective immediately, Kirsten will take on a new role as our CALS Assistant Dean for Graduate Education.
</span></p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0"><br>
</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0">In this newly created position Prof. Limesand will provide broad oversight and strategic guidance for our MS and PhD graduate education programs across the college. Although direct responsibility for graduate program
administration and performance will continue to reside with the individual programs and their associated CALS academic units, College level oversight is important to ensure that graduate programs and growth align with College goals and mission. In several
areas, including program funding, marketing, potential future interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic partnerships with other units across campus it will be beneficial to everyone to have coordination provided centrally, especially as we continue to
develop degree partnerships outside single academic units. </p>

</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0">Kirsten's new position will be administratively located in the office of Career and Academic Services. This is a fractional appointment and she retains her existing faculty appointments in Nutritional Sciences as well
as in BIO5 and two GIDP programs. </p>
