If you want to see the summaries of past meetings, go to http://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/faculty-senate/senate-agendas.

1. The Senate voted to approve the UA Open Access policy for publications. A copy of that policy is at http://new.library.arizona.edu/research/open-access/policy. In short, the University will be working with faculty to make their journal articles available to all through the UA Campus Repository. They will work with the journals to assure there is no copyright infringement before anything is published. More will be forth coming on exactly how this will all take place, the procedures, etc. Check out the article in Lo Que Pasa https://uaatwork.arizona.edu/lqp/faculty-senate-approves-policy-expand-public-access-ua-research?utm_source=lqp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly_lqp.

2. We also had a lively discussion about proposed changes to the University Handbook for Appointed Personnel. The proposed changes can be found at http://policy.arizona.edu/faculty-affairs-and-academics/proposed-revisions-university-handbook-appointed-personnel. Look them over and let me know if you have any concerns.

3. Finally, there was much discussion about Non-Tenured Track (Non-Continuing Track) faculty positions and how they are represented at the University. There were discussions about who are included in the category “General Faculty.” As I understand it, if you are on a multi-year contract (MY), Continuing or Continuing eligible (C/CE), Tenured or Tenure eligible (T/TE), or hold an Emeritus status, you are General Faculty. If you are on a year-to-year (YTY) contract, you are not, regardless if you’ve been here on a YTY for the last 10 consecutive years. And there’s the rub – we have many faculty, on YTY contracts for multiple years. This is an ongoing conversation and I know your Senators would like to hear your views. A couple links to look at are:

http://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/facgov/files/nte_in_colleges.pdf - This shows the data from 2014 of various faculty positions within colleges at the UA.

http://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/facgov/files/what_does_it_mean_to_be_a_member_of_the_general_faculty_0.pdf - These are two proposals that the Senate never got to because we simply ran out of time.

I welcome any comments or questions regarding these or any issues you would like to address.

Regards,

Ed Martin, Senator-at-Large

________________

**Doing something once is worth more than seeing it done a thousand times**

Edward C.
