Dear ALVSCE Colleagues,

To be certain that you have all seen it, I am resending the latest guidance from Dr. Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation (SVPRI) on federal Executive Orders and their impact on research related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). Please review the attached.

As indicated in the guidance, several federal agencies including CDC, USGS, NSF, DOE, NASA and Department of Labor have directed UA to stop all DEI activities, including spending. Overall, our goal is to minimize disruption to your research, which we expect will continue as "business as usual" as much as possible.

Below are several practical steps that we ask you to take to help us to navigate this situation:

  1. Focus should be on removing tasks and goals that are specifically DEI-centric.

  1. If you are the lead UA PI on a grant with DEIA components from one of these agencies, or another wherein an agency official has notified you directly to stop DEIA activities, please notify me with a cc to your unit head and business manager by email with (1) the email you received, and (2) the following information (this applies to subcontracts to UA wherein you are the UA subcontract lead PI):

     *   Funding agency
     *   Project title
     * Project beginning and end dates
     *   Total budget to UA
     * Portion of budget to be paused because of primary emphasis on DEI activities
     * Number and types of personnel (grad students, undergrads, postdocs, research staff) that you expect will be directly impacted by salary or stipend loss

  1. Notify your project team (including subcontract PIs if UA is lead institution) of this requirement and ask them to conduct a similar assessment within their subcontracts.

  1. If you are struggling to categorize your work into DEI and non-DEI activities, please feel free to consult with me directly.

  1. Compliance with these requirements is mandatory. We are here to offer help and guidance to the best of our ability.

  1. RII's Research Funding Updates<https://research.arizona.edu/administration/federal-funding-updates?j=1713153&sfmc_sub=35993279&l=1205_HTML&u=38967214&mid=514008426&jb=1> is the "go to" website for UA's most updated information on these and related issues.

We recognize the additional work being asked of you to address these emergent issues and thank you for that!

Kind regards,
Jon
