Dozens of NOAA websites centered on climate change, extreme weather research and drought monitoring information are scheduled to go dark at midnight Saturday because of contract cuts ordered by the Trump administration.

The websites, connected to the agency's Office of Atmospheric Research, are slated for shutdown because Trump officials terminated NOAA's cloud usage contract, according to an internal document obtained by POLITICO's E&E News. Among the sites scheduled to go offline are those that use Amazon, Google and WordPress services, according to a second internal document.

The NOAA websites provide essential information for scientists, industry, universities and governments worldwide. And if they go down, the consequences would be so severe that "100% unrecoverable data loss will occur," the second memo notes.

The websites set to go dark go far beyond the Trump administration's attempts to purge information related to climate change or diversity, equity and inclusion from NOAA documents. It's a crippling of invaluable data that powers NOAA, and their loss will affect weather research and public safety, said Craig McLean, who formerly served as the agency's top scientist.

McLean said it represents the mindless slashing of basic federal functions being pushed by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.

"It's insane and it's basically the chain saw from DOGE," McLean said. "It's going to compromise the ability of the agency to perform its mission, it's going to compromise the ability of participating scientists, commercial sector and private citizens to be pursuing the information that they need."

NOAA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It's not clear how much money would be saved by eliminating the cloud contract - though McLean warned it would be a fraction of what the lost websites could cost the nation. It's also likely illegal because it violates NOAA's statutory obligations, he said.

Bloomberg first reported<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/url4763.email.politicopro.com/ls/click?upn=u001.Q6ij-2B6lCBUOmLoIECmNeyca6s-2BMyVObdJRIqWxbDCU9NNzD32iMU1B40KKEw1nm7cnlWfUzdW46CVGrG-2BoYSQ9SKIJPBaCBr5qYDjsFFT-2Be39-2FeDuJ8yakKotX6CA7q50D-2FsBCuZpmXNOks3uNMvHJdnEoqcfBf2yc-2Fg8IZ5htZedERTUmltNmvDOg091c-2B08UFgxdlSR7RyA9LXBm0XLdVvvfL2sS-2FngQnw-2FaCmTuq-2BehijUbz5swGYJ0RGZVKtT6aCiZKiylWG3Xnx0-2BOhCSYxgApxjK0AOVEyFdUgn2mBw12yJ7eA5dQHB1LnOCZqKJVWoktnYik95AovOduxJaEmyEgXPo4OwXCLtbH8XAac0cdwv0OeSj-2BVDZq9DdfmAANmJX5Ubp9RK-2BPxOCIAJjPAMX40-2FvSNr75ugwvdfC-2B7RkX8OU0pmsEvhq4cecSFHQeNtHDhkhO3JIgnbk3dRKKVnWdzANzLZQW15o-2BY0YhMDtAsD7wTaTtcoCKZwdsmiLSdVJd30he2rZnOubS9LwQ9lcRyr1kIOyKGwpA0Oc-2BIF-2FSVyfOLh7n3bPQ9ogtM9YWkJWKQwMMIA-2Fq2XGUvu0qaiFxG1QB-2FVYu6Ors1Yfw-3DgVdB_kbcaZK4nIc7Krp1B3zSkdHbwQTgo6xU9Tca8-2BTEXgVXsXEBUY1fbDy0-2BMXKYjwb8fStFOBygpTEzKNIX86GTZsTsQWexCfE7kAbu5eoo9hIRXouRZOrUKKPqtMBcg2oHBCU7XCfYfkDHuJ3Emo89ys-2BVFGHaFZWURLfz-2BpqniM6YNPGdYiyrsgQEDka9lAfTgkNJ4NxZA2IsIp14rChgCnKRUY9-2BJK-2FjIvlL2xpEGwt62gmxG8d7IQ8FHV0CusItktyI-2BW-2FBDeN8WPRbYpl5cWO5-2FMM3ggWKHUw-2FVYMn-2FZWdcYyzf9-2FUufI753kr5A-2FQD-2BYFzHwunyhLEDUcWYv-2FKcBaqnRxHuvkg9LzaZa7ZY8Bx-2BwcMW7bLUdRD9lHo3rl3fm67nyLSmPkNiIeqRUi4vWhu5E-2FQRm-2B6REsqJz3wd8rIZcLhU911M-2Bov2YODeKTG9uJMk1-2FcGRNX5DmyRq0WNIqyz2vyEoVFZp-2FVmhBCVYu4BBDaLBWRkyYaTgIrBAwLtZ7WMEM0qXLfUYq1kYjpPLkgClKBvysRVs8UoTxfyY-3D__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!lXal01gUffDnP_S--7H2f-UIjs-iSB-fg7puJk6oFyHWWGn7bYkRCZP_tKmsoa3iSXolT464S8KVqNpLabkV$> on the possible website outages.

The losses would include essential websites such as research.noaa.gov and epic.noaa.gov, according to the memo. The Earth Prediction Innovation Center website hosts data and information that supports "a collaboration within the Weather Enterprise - government, industry, and academia - to improve weather forecasting systems."

One NOAA employee who had knowledge of the contract identified 15 NOAA websites that could be removed from public view, including four with "research" in their domain names and another two that appear to be associated with the agency's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.

"The big thing right now is DOGE canceling the ... contract which will take down a bunch of websites across NOAA tonight," said the employee. The employee was granted anonymity for fear of retaliation.

The Trump administration has made clear it wants to eliminate or severely diminish NOAA's climate science programs, many of which are housed in OAR. But the websites that would go down at midnight are a much broader swath than that. They form the backbone of NOAA's research and weather work, providing basic information that commercial fisheries as well as the oil and gas industry need to plan for future conditions.

One site is the front page to NOAA's research initiatives<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/url4763.email.politicopro.com/ls/click?upn=u001.Q6ij-2B6lCBUOmLoIECmNeyVLp6juFRYB6kYNrecZfnNLZkc-2F0n4-2FpCDuh7u3yny4E7OmEsqIc-2FmD053qfZBAKaQ-3D-3DgnJK_kbcaZK4nIc7Krp1B3zSkdHbwQTgo6xU9Tca8-2BTEXgVXsXEBUY1fbDy0-2BMXKYjwb8fStFOBygpTEzKNIX86GTZsTsQWexCfE7kAbu5eoo9hIRXouRZOrUKKPqtMBcg2oHBCU7XCfYfkDHuJ3Emo89ys-2BVFGHaFZWURLfz-2BpqniM6YNPGdYiyrsgQEDka9lAfTgkNJ4NxZA2IsIp14rChgCnKRUY9-2BJK-2FjIvlL2xpEGwt62gmxG8d7IQ8FHV0CusItktyI-2BW-2FBDeN8WPRbYpl5cWO5-2FMM3ggWKHUw-2FVYMn-2FZWdcYyzf9-2FUufI753kr5A-2FQD-2BYFzHwunyhLEDUcWYv-2FKcBaqnRxHuvkg9LzaZa7ZY8Bx-2BwcMW7bLUdRD9lHo3rl3fm67nyLSmPkNiIeqRUi4vWhu5E-2FQRm-2B6REsqJz3wd-2FrErV0FLRSuRLYf-2Ff2NKkrfffv1z1X0ngnY4Obxqj8KaQwsaEulda5bLzfHN26LLuywpo99iUCAziIdBkXM1ICWNMlIy-2BF-2FoAEjlIVEXaZxtslNa8O3iPbeMrkVvaqk24-3D__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!lXal01gUffDnP_S--7H2f-UIjs-iSB-fg7puJk6oFyHWWGn7bYkRCZP_tKmsoa3iSXolT464S8KVqOqPI4TY$>. A third site belongs to the Office of Science Support, which tracks, evaluates and communicates with partners about NOAA's research and development portfolio. The office also supports efforts "to increase publicly available research results to ensure everyone can benefit from research conducted at NOAA."

Critics say DOGE's actions already have reduced public access to research results by pulling information off websites that the administration believes run counter to its agenda.

Information about one of NOAA's most popular and far-reaching education programs, Sea Grant, also could disappear if the site<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/url4763.email.politicopro.com/ls/click?upn=u001.Q6ij-2B6lCBUOmLoIECmNeyYjS53egwIiyBJW2VC6ZkLrVieKqo3etTROeM4C26MGX_WZ9_kbcaZK4nIc7Krp1B3zSkdHbwQTgo6xU9Tca8-2BTEXgVXsXEBUY1fbDy0-2BMXKYjwb8fStFOBygpTEzKNIX86GTZsTsQWexCfE7kAbu5eoo9hIRXouRZOrUKKPqtMBcg2oHBCU7XCfYfkDHuJ3Emo89ys-2BVFGHaFZWURLfz-2BpqniM6YNPGdYiyrsgQEDka9lAfTgkNJ4NxZA2IsIp14rChgCnKRUY9-2BJK-2FjIvlL2xpEGwt62gmxG8d7IQ8FHV0CusItktyI-2BW-2FBDeN8WPRbYpl5cWO5-2FMM3ggWKHUw-2FVYMn-2FZWdcYyzf9-2FUufI753kr5A-2FQD-2BYFzHwunyhLEDUcWYv-2FKcBaqnRxHuvkg9LzaZa7ZY8Bx-2BwcMW7bLUdRD9lHo3rl3fm67nyLSmPkNiIeqRUi4vWhu5E-2FQRm-2B6REsqJz3wd9alhedW3ZQ8PGXcpNlYix5IVp3so-2BZFfImBpnXIAiL38yOamy-2BYPXcbCv2KvEJNU9SD5UCMKoe8rNBTHoQ47eo2yLHTAJDRFqthREkhZyJQhHVHrK60OJQo-2BJkEp32zkU-3D__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!lXal01gUffDnP_S--7H2f-UIjs-iSB-fg7puJk6oFyHWWGn7bYkRCZP_tKmsoa3iSXolT464S8KVqDe3ogLY$> goes dark. Sea Grant was established by Congress nearly 60 years ago and provides federal support to researchers at 34 universities in coastal and Great Lakes states, as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. Federal investment in Sea Grant totaled $93 million in 2023, according to its website.

Another NOAA employee told E&E News that the internet service contract could affect staff access to essential websites at the agency's Silver Spring headquarters. "I guess we'll find out on Monday when we come in if we're able to login," they said.

McLean, NOAA's former top scientist, said the termination of the contract is outside of the expected Trump administration assault on climate science.

"While this might have been started as an attempt to reduce the costs of the government for what the government was spending, it's not even yet the Trump attack on climate, but de facto, it becomes a Trump attack on climate because of everything that's included in here," he said.
