RDS is seeking feedback on the way that they provide service to research-focused faculty, and they have developed the below survey to collect those data. Funding Opportunity: DARPA Microsystems Technology Office Releases Office (MTO) Wide BAA

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) announced its FY 2024 BAA. MTO has significantly modernized their thrust areas to “address future microsystems-related challenges in this unprecedented era of advancement.”  To uphold DARPA’s mission, the office has identified the following areas of focus:
1.        Scientific Disruption
2.        Microsystems manufacturing ecosystem
3.        Dual use by design

Abstracts are encouraged and must be submitted by March 9, 2025, while full proposals are due no later than May 9, 2025.

Congressional Update: Senate AI Working Group Releases Bipartisan AI Roadmap to Spur Greater Spending and Passage of New Legislation Focused on AI Innovation and Safeguards

The roadmap, called Driving U.S. Innovation in Artificial Intelligence, aims to provide direction to congressional Committees in shaping AI policy and future legislation and calls for a $32 billion investment in non-defense AI research and development (R&D) each year.  The proposed funding level would be a huge boost in funding compared to current funding levels.  Projected federal non-defense spending in AI in fiscal year (FY) 2024 is only $2.4 billion.

2024- 2025 Faculty Development Communities for Promotion (FDCP) program
The goal of this program is to create small faculty groups and link them with one faculty mentor who has been successful in the promotion process. Faculty Professional Development in Data Science Teaching

The curriculum is divided into two sessions: one focusing on pedagogical best practices in skills training and the other providing experience teaching and using common tools for working with data. USDA is seeking nominations for four positions on the Federal Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production. USDA will accept nominations from May 7, 2024, to July 7, 2024. Awardees of the GWS program will specifically focus on the implications of water availability and extreme weather events on food and energy security.  They will also house and analyze data to monitor and provide feedback on strategic and tactical efforts for DOD and other interagency groups.  Proposals to the NOFO should align with the following technical priorities, with more information on each found in the full solicitation:

  1.  “Fully develop and validate the “Pathways to Impacts” framework;
  2.  Support of strategic and operational planning;
  3.  Support of allies and partners and defense diplomacy;

Whitehall Foundation Grants

​Research Grants: Research grants are available to established scientists of all ages. Research grants will not be awarded to investigators who have already received, or expect to receive, substantial support from other sources, even if it is for an unrelated purpose. Research grants normally range from $30,000 to $75,000 per year for up to three years.

Grants-in-Aid: The Grants-in-Aid program is designed for researchers at the assistant professor level who experience difficulty in competing for research funds because they have not yet become firmly established. Grants-in-Aid can also be made to senior scientists.  Grants-in-Aid are awarded for a one-year period and do not exceed $30,000.

This BAA also includes the Countering Foreign Influence Program (CFIP) which conducts risk assessments of key personnel to determine potential foreign influence.  ​This BAA is similar to one released last year but now includes “Emerging Threats” as a topic thrust instead of “Global Change.” CFIP gives risk rating from Low to Very High and may require risk mitigation plans or document risk acceptance decisions for proposals rated high or very high.  Public and private organizations and institutions of higher education are encouraged to submit proposals.
