Dear CALS Faculty,

Our apologies for the delay in getting summaries and additional information to you. It has been a busy month in Faculty Senate.

First, we would like to inform you about a special Faculty Senate meeting this Monday, March 27th, at 3 pm (via zoom). The special meeting will discuss this memo<https://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/2023-03/Resignation%20safety-committee-letter-march-3-2023.pdf> detailing the reasons for the Faculty Committee on University Safety for All disbandment. Additionally, there will be discussions of resolutions brought forward by the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. You can register for the meeting here: https://arizona.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XYieyCAlSKuu3hGcLnrWjA

Here is a brief review of the items we find relevant from the March 13th faculty senate meeting. Note that a full recording of the meeting can be viewed here<https://arizona.app.box.com/s/xypikopn45wdko3esv4r16bdiumw5y5s>.

There was much discussion about the I-School, a new stand-alone school that is not considered a college but will function as a college and report to Central Administration and not a Dean. The discussion focused on its position as a stand-alone school, how that compares to being a college, and how the school will be funded. It was noted that I-Schools in other peer institutions exist with similar structures. The discussion was tabled until the next regularly scheduled meeting, and questions are being taken and handled outside of the meeting time.

Another issue that is quite important to CALS is the UITS Centralization project. CIO Barry Brummond attended and presented 4 pre-selected questions: Who established these requirements? How will UITS and college IT units work together? What are the major milestones? Why does the UArizona use the cloud for some services? (To hear his presentation in full, please see the recording at the 1:45 mark.)

Additionally, an email<https://view.comms.arizona.edu/?qs=f6f5ebcd1da26322c50712e417c0464d616dd9e3b724b8d060152969fe6f318cbfc7453ec51134047fb50b4ada8b6a7c6cd771a341e7a51c7739372914ae59d85398f87b9a992ac85d18a28f1bbfa059> was sent to our campus community during the presentation, providing the first public information about the UITS centralization project. There were 6 minutes for questions, and during that time, a Senator asked about how the UITS centralization effort would impact research and cost for labs, researchers, and colleges. No clear information was given on these points. We anticipate that this will come up again in the April 3rd Faculty Senate, so if faculty have specific questions you would like us to ask, please either email us directly or use our anonymous Qualtrics survey here: https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4ZXIgJJOLxYVaD4

Thank you for your continued engagement in our college and our university,

Ravi, Tim & Katie

Senators, CALS

Dear CALS faculty,

Our apologies for the delay in sending you an update from the Faculty Senate’s last meeting. It’s been a trying time for us all. Before reporting on the Faculty Senate, we did want to make sure that all CALS faculty know about the listening session hosted by the Faculty Chair and Vice Chair that will be held this Monday, Oct. 17th, from 5-6:30 pm. The email describing the event is attached, and faculty can register for the event here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAlcuiorDwrEt31OBiThblUDt_05Ts_WCEO

Here is what you need to know about the last Faculty Senate meeting:
Most of the meeting was taken up by the discussion of the Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) Center’s representation in the Faculty Senate. The discussion focused on Faculty bylaws and whether the representation of RII was needed given that they are already included in the Common College. The Faculty Senate voted on whether to allow additional senate seats for RII or refer the topic to the Academic Personnel Policy Committee (APPC) to understand faculty representation in colleges. Senators voted to refer this to APPC.

The next Faculty Senate meeting is Monday, Nov. 7th, 3-5 pm. You can attend via zoom (registration link: https://arizona.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dj2cU8N3QkObpFctGv-BDQ) or in person (LAW Room 164).

Also, just a reminder: You can give us anonymous comments/feedback on any faculty-related issue in this Qualtrics Survey: https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4ZXIgJJOLxYVaD4
