[Faculty] CALS Assistant Dean for Graduate Education

Everyone,

Welcome back!   I hope your classes are off to a smooth start.

I'm writing to you this morning for two reasons.  First, I want to acknowledge the fabulous job that Dr. Kirsten Limesand has done as our inaugural Assistant Dean for Graduate Education over the past 4 years.  Like George Washington, she built a position from scratch and has expanded it to the point that now we can't imagine how we got along without it in earlier years.  By now you probably have heard that Kirsten is taking those talents over to the Graduate College where she will serve as Dean.  Congratulations and enormous thanks to Kirsten for the leadership she has provided to CALS!  We wish you the best in your new position!  We take some comfort in knowing that we'll continue to work closely with you on all things related to graduate education, and also that your faculty home is still with us in CALS.

My second reason for writing is to alert everyone that we intend to fill the Assistant Dean for Graduate Education position as soon as possible.  We are currently working through budgetary authorization to post the position internally, and expect to have that authorization before the end of this month.  This note is a heads-up to CALS faculty to be thinking about whether you'd like to be considered for this important leadership role.  While the parameters are not yet finalized, we will likely be looking for a CALS faculty member at the tenured Associate or Full Professor rank.   The position will likely be a .25 FTE administrative appointment that substitutes for a corresponding portion of your current FTE split.

If the idea of a college-level leadership role intrigues you, and you have an interest in strengthening graduate student education, this would be a marvelous opportunity to expand your skill set.  Please think it over and don't hesitate to reach out to either me or our Associate Dean for Research, Parker Antin, if you have questions.   We will announce the position posting when it has been finalized, most likely in the next 2-3 weeks.
