Faculty colleagues,

CALS is seeking nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Graduate Education. The Assistant Dean will report to the CALS Associate Dean for Career and Academic Services to provide leadership and oversight for MS and PhD programs within the college.  If the idea of a college-level leadership role intrigues you, and you have an interest in strengthening graduate education, this would be a marvelous opportunity to expand your skill set. Self-nominations are encouraged!

Nominations should include a CV and cover letter expressing interest in the position.  Please address your cover letters to the attention of Search Committee, Assistant Dean for Graduate Education.  Please email nominations to Cecilia Mazon (cmazon at cals.arizona.edu) in the CALS Office of Career and Academic Services no later than February 24, 2023.

Specifics of the position:

Although direct responsibility for graduate program administration and performance resides with the individual programs and their associated CALS unit(s), College level oversight is important to ensure that graduate education programs align with College goals and mission.  The CALS Assistant Dean for Graduate Education will work with graduate programs to provide vision and strategic guidance, to oversee allocation of CALS resources in support of graduate education, to work with graduate programs to obtain new sources of graduate program support (including, but not limited to fellowships and training grants), and to serve as liaison with the Graduate College and University Administration on issues affecting graduate education.

This position will be a .25 FTE administrative appointment that substitutes for a corresponding portion of the successful candidate's current FTE split, with the details of the remaining .75 FTE composition to be determined with mutual agreement of the successful candidate and the academic unit head. The position will include an appropriate administrative stipend.

The Assistant Dean for Graduate Education will work closely with both the CALS Associate Dean for Career and Academic Services and the Associate Dean for Research, as well as academic unit heads, graduate program coordinators and directors of graduate studies, and the ALVSCE Division Business Services team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  *   Provide college-level vision and strategic guidance to enhance recruitment and student training across CALS MS and PhD programs
  *   Oversee allocation of CALS resources in support of graduate education
  *   Work with graduate programs to obtain new sources of program support, including but not limited to fellowships and training grants
  *   Serve as the CALS liaison with the Graduate College and University Administration on issues affecting graduate education, including serving as the CALS representative on the G-CAAC committee (Graduate-College Academic Administrators Council)
  *   Other duties, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  *   Earned PhD in a CALS-related field
  *   Rank of Associate or Full professor, with tenure
  *   Demonstrated success in research through an active research program
  *   Strong oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Administrative experience within a University unit, which could include faculty hiring, budgeting, academic program assessment and/or strategic planning
  *   Familiarity with federal agency research funding processes
