Good afternoon CALES Faculty,

Just a final few updates before we close out the semester:

  1. The Faculty Senate meeting on Monday, Dec. 4th, can be watched here<https://arizona.app.box.com/s/xypikopn45wdko3esv4r16bdiumw5y5s/file/1380324920518>. The entire discussion was around the financial crisis, and President Robbins and CFO Rulney had the opportunity to speak to all senators and answer questions. No formal plan was presented; only ideas were discussed. President Robbins did extend an invitation for anyone to help with the plan and requested the help of Gary Rhoades’ GFFRC Committee. This was 11 days before the ABRO 15th deadline. We have still not received a written plan but will pass it on to you all if we do.

  2. Gary Rhoades spoke and provided GFFRC’s latest work (Attachment 1), which provides the committee’s thoughts on the current financial crisis and specific recommendations.

  3. Dr. Jeff Michler, a faculty member for our own Agriculture and Resource Economics (AREC) program, spoke during the Open Session. He (and Senator Zeiders) also penned a summary of the UA financial situation that has been shared widely across the university. They welcome feedback or thoughts on the summary, as they plan on revising it with any new additional information. (See Attachment 2 and this link here)<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FfUgSvcXNbayZ__f19RxHZYRWXqH6KCpBSdHPW9QhDE/edit?usp=sharing>.

  4. A motion was presented to Faculty Senate to pass a resolution that formally stated to ABOR that elected representatives have not been asked to contribute to, engage with, review, or approve the Dec. 15th ABOR plan. The resolution did not pass, in part, because faculty argued that the president had requested input that day (during the meeting). Thus, faculty members would work, in good faith, with the president on a potential plan in the next 11 days.

  5. Finally, there is a special senate session today to review program proposals and policy changes (agenda link here<https://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/events/special-faculty-senate-meeting-3>). The recording will be available later this week on the Senate website.

As always, we continue to monitor the financial situation carefully, and we welcome your feedback and ideas. We want to thank those of you who have contacted us with your comments and/or concerns. We read them all and take them into consideration in our advocacy.
