Dear Colleagues:
I am writing to highlight this funding opportunity from The BIO5 Institute. For your convenience, I am including the request for applications (attached).
First, proposals should fall within one of the BIO5 strategic research areas of:
* Resilient Aging
* Infectious Disease and Microbiome
* Precision Medicine and Omics
* Technology for Health
Next, the proposal should address one of the following specific topic areas:
* Health Equity, ensuring that all persons have the opportunity to achieve their best health. Projects that are relevant to a future Clinical and Translational Science Award application are encouraged.
* Advancing data science for biological and medical applications. Projects that pair advanced data science techniques with subject/domain expertise, and address reproducibility/data sharing are encouraged.
* Bioeconomy-related research that positions UArizona to address challenges laid out in the White House Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy<https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2022/09/12/executive-order-on-advancing-biotechnology-and-biomanufacturing-innovation-for-a-sustainable-safe-and-secure-american-bioeconomy/#:~:text=It%20is%20the%20policy%20of,and%20national%20and%20economic%20security.>. DESCRIPTION
The BIO5 Institute, Improving Health TRIF initiative, is accepting “Rapid Response” proposals for interdisciplinary basic science, technology, clinical, or population research that will lead to preliminary data for submission of external grant proposals. All personnel and long-lead infrastructure must already be in place so that work can begin within 30 days of being funded. Projects will be up to 6 months in duration and up to $50,000 in budget. Shorter duration and smaller budget proposals are welcome.
Proposals should fall within one of the BIO5 strategic research areas of Resilient Aging, Infectious Disease and Microbiome, Precision Medicine and Omics, and Technology for Health. Further, the proposal should address one of the following specific topic areas:

PROPOSAL FORMAT
In two pages or less, provide:
* Significance
* Work to be performed
* Deliverables
* Specific external grant mechanism targeted (showing that the work proposed is necessary and sufficient to be competitive for this mechanism)
* Timeline (up to 6 months)
Also provide investigator biosketches (5 page maximum) and budget as described below.
BUDGET & BUDGET JUSTIFICATION
Use the budget template provided and include a budget justification with enough detail to assure that the requested funds are adequate and justified. Funds may be provided for the following:
* Supplies, small equipment
* Staff, postdoc, and student effort (no PI / faculty time)
* Core facility use
Travel, capital equipment and publication costs are not supported.
INVESTIGATORS
At least two co-principal investigators must be named, from different disciplines and ideally different colleges. The co-PIs must have principal investigator eligibility for federal grant submissions, according to the University of Arizona<https://bio5.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e4e43b7b401ccef2b4683679&id=d509cd64a1&e=c6b11e66b6>. Co-PIs must be BIO5 members or be willing to apply for membership. Other personnel are welcome to serve as co-investigators.
