[Faculty] Call for NSF - BSF Collaboration in 2018/9

Please see below an opportunity for funding and collaboration with Israeli scientists.

Dear Colleague,

We now have the full results of the 2017/18 round of the NSF-BSF programs, and can conclude that it was another highly successful year. Some 151 full proposals were submitted by teams of U.S. and Israeli scientists, and 49 were granted, increasing the overall success rate to 32.5%, well above previous years as well as the overall NSF success rate.

As we approach the 2018/19 year, we expect that more U.S. and Israeli scientists will take notice of the attractiveness of the program, increasing the number of submissions. For the coming round, please note the following points:

1. An increasing number of NSF programs have moved to submission with no deadline, and application submission is permitted anytime throughout the year. Based on the experience gained by programs that are already practicing this policy, it is expected that the move will reduce the annual number of applications in these programs. If so, the overall success rates in them will rise proportionally.

2. In programs with no deadlines, an Israeli scientist may submit a second NSF-BSF proposal anytime, after his first application was turned down. As previously, an Israeli scientist may not have two simultaneously pending NSF-BSF applications.

3. The BSF is presently working with the Israeli Innovation Authority (previously the Office of the Chief Scientist) towards implementation of new U.S.-Israeli programs with a more applied nature than its traditional basic science affinity. These programs, if implemented, will not use traditional BSF resources.

Below you will find a list of the active BSF and NSF-BSF joint funding programs, with deadlines (or no deadlines) and links to the BSF Call for Proposals (that includes links to the relevant NSF programs’ publications).

  1.  BSF Regular Program. Deadline for applications is November 20, 2018. The website will be opened on September 1, 2018. The regulations can be found here<http://www.bsf.org.il/data/FormsToDownload/BSF-Instructions%202018.pdf>.

2.       BSF program Prof. Rahamimoff Travel Grants for Young Scientists. Deadline for applications by U.S. or Israeli PhD students is November 28, 2018. Call for Proposals can be found here<http://www.bsf.org.il/data/FormsToDownload/BSF-TravelGrant-call.pdf>. (22 grants were approved in 2018).

3.       NSF-BSF program in Basic Plasma Sciences and Engineering. Deadline for application by the U.S. partner to the NSF is October 19, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is October 24, 2018. 4.       NSF-BSF program in Materials. Deadline for application by the U.S. partner to the NSF is November 1, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is November 7, 2018. 5.       NSF-BSF program in Computing and Communication Foundations. Deadline for application by the U.S. partner is expected to be approximately on November 15, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF about a week later. 6.       NSF-BSF program in Computer and Network Systems. 7.       NSF-BSF program in Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS). Deadline for application by the U.S. partner is expected to be approximately on November 15, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF about a week later. 8.       NSF-BSF program in Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases. Deadline for application by the U.S. partner to the NSF is November 21, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is November 27, 2018. 9.       NSF-BSF program in Computational Neuroscience.  Deadline for applications by the U.S. partner to the NSF is November 27, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is December 3, 2018. Deadline for application by the U.S. partner to the NSF is November 28, 2018 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is December 4, 2018. 11.   NSF-BSF program in Nuclear Physics – Experiment and Theory; Elementary Particle Physics – Experiment; Particle Astrophysics - Experiment.
