Dear Faculty,

The University of Arizona's Water & Energy Sustainable Technology (WEST<https://west.arizona.edu/content/research>) Center is focused on water, wastewater treatment, and alternative energy. The $5.5 million state-of-the-art facility brings together industry, government and academia for the development of new technologies that will help communities address issues of water scarcity and reuse. The WEST Center is unique in its ability to conduct the translational research necessary to advance the sustainable technologies of the future, and is poised to answer some of the nation's biggest questions about sustainable water and energy use.

Technologies:
The WEST Center houses advanced water treatment technologies including oxidation, microfiltration, and reverse osmosis. The Center is also capable of assay and detection of emerging pathogens and compounds of emerging concern, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and endocrine disruptors. The WEST Center also performs bioassays for toxicity testing.

Facilities and Infrastructure:
The WEST Center is a LEED-certified facility with access to a range of water qualities for treatment and testing, and consists of three primary areas: an administrative complex, a laboratory complex, and a high-bay complex, all collocated with a wastewater treatment plant. The Center's administrative complex includes offices, conference rooms, and student study areas. The laboratory complex is fully equipped with a molecular, microbiology, real-time sensor, aquatic toxicology, advanced water treatment, and emerging contaminant laboratory. With its high-bay complex, the WEST Center is also capable of accommodating intermediate-scale test beds for water and wastewater treatment.
Located within Pima County's water reclamation facility, Agua Nueva, WEST also is adjacent to reclaimed water recharge basins, constructed wetlands, and a solar park.

Partnerships:
The WEST Center has created valuable research partnerships within both the public and private sector, including Pima County Wastewater, City of Tucson Water, Dow Chemical, Suez, Agilent, PepsiCo, Trojan UV, Metawater, among others.
Additionally, researchers at the Center are continually working with southwestern communities and industry partners to support a sustainable environment, as well as educate stakeholders. The Center provides technical training and education to students from the University of Arizona and local high schools.

Specific areas of interest:

  *   Environmental microbiology
  * Water reuse / Reclaimed water
  *   Emerging microbial contaminants
  * Validation of water treatment technologies
  *   Real-time sensor technologies
  *   Water quality monitoring
  *   Pathogen and Chemical analysis
  * Neighboring water recharge basins and constructed wetlands
  *   Solar park / off-grid solutions
  * Technical training & education on water / wastewater systems
  *   Industry and Utility partnerships

Please contact Associate Director, WEST Center Robert Stea at rstea at email.arizona.edu<mailto:rstea at email.arizona.edu> or 520-626-8226 if you wish to use these facilities.

Thank you
Sangita
