Inspiring Ideas in Philanthropy: Grants for Lunch
You’re invited to our upcoming Grants for Lunch event next Wednesday, January 24th featuring Gary Greenberg from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. He will speak about the role of a foundation program officer and offer insight on how the missions of the funder and prospective grantee come together. This will be a great professional development opportunity for those who are interested in how foundations operate, or those new to fundraising who want to add to their development toolbox!

The Center for Border and Global Journalism is now offering faculty grants for work on research projects being done domestically or abroad involving the study of freedom of expression and freedom of the press in any academic discipline. Applications are open to all current UA full-time faculty including Post-Doctoral scholars and non-tenure track faculty. The grant will fund up to $1,500 to research between May 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019. All awards are subject to funding availability.

The opportunity will provide support of up to $2,000 to postdoctoral scholars in order to advance their independent research. The grant is designed to provide support for the development of the scholar’s research training and experience. Wildlife Acoustics, a privately held company based in Concord, Massachusetts, supports a range of activities in the area of environmental stewardship, with the goal of enabling those involved in animal biology, research, and conservation to do their best work well and quickly. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to support bioacoustics research for data collection and/or analysis while contributing to long-term conservation.

The Kessler Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities through discovery, innovation, demonstration, application, and dissemination. Concept applications are being invited from nonprofit organizations for the annual Signature Employment grants program, which supports new pilot initiatives, demonstration projects, or social ventures with the potential to generate new solutions to high unemployment and underemployment among individuals with disabilities. Grants of up to $500,000 will be awarded for over two years. Upon review, select candidates will be invited to submit a full proposal by June 15, 2018.

The Aneurysm and AVM Foundation (TAAF) is dedicated to improving the lives, support networks, and medical care of those affected by aneurysm and other vascular malformations of the brain. TAAF is an all-volunteer organization run by survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals. Applications are being accepted for scientific research projects with the potential to significantly advance the field toward an effective understanding of the mechanisms of cerebrovascular disease. TAAF will award grants of up to $25,000 to investigators that highlight innovative research strategies in the cerebrovascular community.

PSC Partners Seeking a Cure works to provide education and support to patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis. Grants of up to $60,000 will be awarded for over two years to research projects that address clinical research questions related to PSC and closely allied diseases. Preference will be given to projects that have the potential to discover a cure for the disease and/or identify novel therapies that may significantly delay time to liver transplantation. Research that will be complementary to the goals and objectives of the International PSC Study Group, including investigation of the functional roles of genes associated with susceptibility to and severity of PSC, is also encouraged.

B*CURED’s primary goal is to fund clinical and translational research projects directly related to the field of brain cancer. Up to $50,000 will be awarded to a clinical doctor or research scientist whose primary focus is brain cancer research. To be eligible, applicants must be a faculty member at a research institution in North America who is undertaking clinical or translational research with the intention of applying for R01 NIH funding or the equivalent within five years; or undertaking innovative research to bridge from bench to animal research or to acquire preclinical data from animal models.

The American College of Psychiatrists is accepting applications for its Award for Creativity in Psychiatric Education. The annual award recognizes a teaching program that demonstrates innovation in psychiatric education. The award consists of a grant and a certificate and also will cover the expenses of one representative from the winning program to attend the college's annual meeting. The award is open to any creative/innovative program for psychiatric education that has been in operation for at least two years and has been a part of a U.S.- or Canadian-approved psychiatric residency training program. Trainees may include medical students, residents, other physicians, allied mental health professionals, and/or members of the community.

The Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health is dedicated to changing lives by advancing the most effective and innovative approaches to group therapy education, training, research, and community outreach. Applications should be research projects focused on the effectiveness of group psychotherapy. Grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded based on the importance of the research to the field and the number of research applications received. Funding can be used to support the basic costs of research. Investigator salaries and travel expenses are not eligible for funding, and equipment purchased for use with a research project must to be donated to an institution upon completion of the project.

The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research was established in 1937 for the purpose of supporting research into the causes and treatment of cancer. The fund has taken a broad approach to the study of cell growth and development, emphasizing the study of the basic biology and chemistry of the underlying processes. The fund supports between twenty-five and thirty new three-year cancer research fellowships. The current fellowship stipend levels are $52,000 for year one; $52,500 for year two; and $53,000 for year three. To be eligible, postdoctoral applicants should have no more than one year of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the application deadline. Doctoral candidates that do not have their degree at time of application deadline are eligible to apply.

The Dannon Company is accepting applications for its Dannon Yogurt, Probiotics and the Gut Microbiome Fellowship Grant. Established in 2012, the program has expanded to include the gut microbiome in recognition of its remarkable potential on the human body — including immune health, brain health, and proper digestion and absorption. The program will award two $25,000 grants to graduate students who show strong interest in exploring yogurt, probiotics, and the gut microbiome's role in promoting human health.

The International Center for Journalists is accepting applications from media professionals for its Arthur F. Burns Fellowship. The annual program offers young media professionals, age 40 and under, an opportunity to share their expertise with colleagues across the Atlantic while working as "foreign correspondents" for their hometown news organizations. Fellows can apply for a nine- or five-to-six-week program. Each U.S. fellow receives a $4,000 stipend to cover living expenses during a nine-week fellowship in Germany. Participants also receive $1,200 for travel expenses or a travel voucher, and the program will pay his/her living expenses during an orientation in Washington, D.C. Fellows on the five-to-six week program will receive an amount proportional to the length of their fellowship.

The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is inviting applications for its 2018-19 Artist Residency Program. From five to ten residencies of three to twelve months will be awarded to craft artists working in wood, glass, metal, fiber, clay, and mixed media. Each artist will receive a $600 monthly stipend that includes a housing/materials allowance and twenty-four-hour access to a two-hundred-square-foot artist studio. During the residency, an artist’s creative work is represented by HCCC and is considered for display in the Asher Sales Gallery. Applicants must be able to fulfill a program requirement of working in their studio twenty-four hours per week and at least two weekends per month during HCCC public hours.

The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is accepting applications for its Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship program. The fellowship is a $30,000 award ($10,000 a year, for up to three years) for periodontists pursuing a career in academia and is not intended to replace support that would normally have been provided by the recipient's institution. To be eligible, applicants must be either a full-time faculty member at the instructor or assistant level or a part-time faculty member at an institution of higher education in the United States. Eligible candidates must have been affiliated for ten years or less with a degree-granting institution and have a career goal focused on teaching and research in periodontology.
