SUBJ: Call for Nominations for Cardon Academy Fellows

The CALS Office of Career and Academic Services and the Bart Cardon Academy for Teaching Excellence (CATE) Fellows are pleased to announce a call for nominations for new Fellows.

CATE was established in 2010 to promote, recognize, discuss, support and celebrate teaching excellence, with the goal of continually improving instructional programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Members are selected through a competitive application process. CATE Fellows are recognized leaders in the college, with established reputations for teaching excellence, including pedagogy, student assessment and student centered learning.

Membership as a Fellow in CATE is a high honor. But, the group is also actively involved in promoting excellence in teaching. Members are expected to regularly engage with the College to support the founding principles of the Academy. Over the past 18 months, CATE Fellows prepared the initial drafts of Professor of Practice promotion guidelines, as well as recommendations for equitable assignments of faculty teaching loads. Of course, they also organize and conduct several annual teaching workshops and an annual guest speaker series, in addition to overseeing the CALS faculty teaching awards.

Membership in CATE is a lifetime appointment, with an expectation of at least five years of active service after initial appointment. Members can cycle between active and inactive status after their first five years of service as career and work commitments dictate. Calls for nominations are not an annual occurrence and reflect the need to keep active members limited to 10-12 persons during any given period. Active CATE members receive a modest annual stipend ($1,000) in recognition of their service to the college.

Attached are the guidelines for application packets for nominees. Nominations may be made by anyone, including self-nominations, and all packets must be returned to Jim Hunt (jeh at email.arizona.edu<mailto:jeh at email.arizona.edu>) no later than March 1, 2018. Applicants will be notified whether they’ve been selected no later than April 15th. Successful applicants will be recognized at the CALS May commencement. Unsuccessful applications will be retained for two years and applicants are encouraged to reapply during the next call-for-nominations by updating their packets.

We have excellent faculty instructors throughout CALS. We deeply appreciate your assistance in recognizing their good work, and helping them to apply their expertise to improve CALS instructional policy and resources.
