The W.M. Keck Foundation Research Program<http://www.wmkeck.org/grant-programs/research> supports pioneering projects in medical research or science and engineering research. Keck funds projects that are distinctive, novel and high-risk with the potential for a significant and transformative impact. This program typically provides up to $1M in project funding over two years and requires a 1:1 match.  Please note that this Keck program does not support center proposals or drug delivery, therapeutics, clinical, or disease-specific research projects.

This is a request for concept papers that will be reviewed for selection for submission to Keck for their pre-application counseling review process. The UA may submit up to four single-page concept papers in each program area.  In addition to the limited solicitation selection process, applicants selected to submit concept papers to Keck, will be required to submit their final concept papers to ORD for review for alignment with Keck review criteria and final approval for submission to Keck.  Research Development Services staff are available for consultation on those criteria.

The UA Foundation (UAF) will submit the final concept papers to Keck and Keck will provide feedback on these concept papers in a follow-up pre-application counseling review session in July-August 2016 attended by UAF and RDS staff. Following this counseling session, and dependent on Keck's recommendations, ORD and the UAF may finalize the selection of one proposal per program area to be submitted to Keck as a Phase I Application in November 2016.

Applicants may not contact the W.M. Keck Foundation directly as Keck requires that all interactions are initiated by the UAF.

Important Dates:

  *   College review internal deadline:  May 16, 2016
  *   ORD internal review deadline: May 20, 2016
  *   ORD internal review of selected concept papers: June 15, 2016
  *   UAF deadline for concept papers for submission to Keck: June 22, 2016
Interested faculty are asked to submit a one-page concept paper proposal to their dean for referral to ORD by the internal deadline, which includes the following information:

  *   Research area - medical research or science and engineering research;
  *   An overview of the proposed project emphasizing any unique aspects and pilot studies;
  *   A description of the methodologies and key personnel;
  *   A brief justification of the need for Keck support including mention of program officer communications or review panels comments; and
  *   An estimated budget broken down, if possible, by major areas, e.g., personnel, equipment, and operations (budgets can be rough approximations at this stage).
Please also provide:

  *   A brief cv (up to five pages)
