The NIH Director’s Early Independence Awards (DP5)<http://arizona.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b6ba9388f9c749678c5f1628d&id=77a3f21b3c&e=9deae42247> program supports exceptional investigators who wish to pursue independent research directly after completion of their terminal doctoral/research degree or clinical residency, thereby forgoing the traditional post-doctoral training period and accelerating their entry into an independent research career. The submitted application must include a description of institutional resources and career development commitment and applicants must arrange to have at least three and no more than five letters of reference submitted on their behalf. Each proposal may request funds of up to $250,000 direct costs per year for a period of 5 years. The UA may submit two applications to this program.

Important dates:

  *   College/Institute review internal deadline:  On or about November 30, 2015.  Please consult with your Dean’s/Director’s office for specific date.
  *   Office for Research and Discovery internal review deadline:  December 7, 2015.
  *   Sponsor Deadline:  January 29, 2016.
Interested investigators who fit the eligibility criteria (see below) are asked to submit a pre-proposal to their deans for referral to the Office for Research & Discovery by the internal deadline. Pre-proposals will include a 2-3 page project description and NIH Biosketch (up to 5 pages).  The project description should address the special “Early Independence” criteria in the announcement (see: Investigator, Environment<http://arizona.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b6ba9388f9c749678c5f1628d&id=a40513c028&e=9deae42247>). Eligible individuals: At the time of application, the individual either 1) within the preceding twelve months must have received a terminal doctoral degree or completed medical residency, or 2) within the following twelve months must complete all the requirements for a doctoral degree or complete a medical residency. The fellowship training period is NOT included in the clinical residency or equivalent training period. The date of degree receipt is that which appears on the official transcript for the degree. The time of application is the date when the application is submitted electronically to NIH through Grants.gov. In addition, at the time of application, the PD/PI must not have served as a post-doctoral fellow following a previous doctoral degree for more than one year. The individual must also not be the PD/PI of an NIH R01 or equivalent grant at the time of award. See also Section III.
