The PI at the research organization must be an SFP full or junior fellow. All research and community partners must be identified on the proposal. AKC Canine Health Foundation Issues RFP for Canine Musculoskeletal Research
Deadline: July 7, 2015
The AKC Canine Health Foundation<http://www.akcchf.org/>’s Musculoskeletal Conditions and Disease Research Program supports research aimed at improving the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and its component tissues in canines. To that end, the foundation has issued a Request for Proposals for projects related to Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. LCPD is a developmental disease characterized by osteonecrosis of the coxofemoral joint in young dogs less than eighteen months of age. It occurs most frequently in small breeds and the etiology is currently unknown. Human LCPD has been associated with COL2A1; however, a recent study ruled out COL2A1 as responsible for canine LCPD. Recent imaging of dogs with LCPD observed an increase in trabecular count and a smaller trabecular thickness, altering the predominant hypothesis that disease was the result of thickening of the bone trabeculae caused by layering of new bone matrix on top of necrotic trabeculae. Based on these recent studies, CHF will award a single grant to a transcriptomics/proteomics pilot project designed to provide preliminary data regarding the mechanism of accelerated trabecular regeneration that leads to disease pathogenesis. Amount: $12,000

To that end, NAGC, in association with the New York Life Foundation<http://www.newyorklife.com/foundation>, will award twenty grants, each to childhood bereavement organizations that have identified a need and seek funding to help them operate more effectively. Applicants must articulate goals that are achievable within twelve months. ACS for Role of Health Care and Insurance in Improving Outcomes in Cancer Prevention
Deadline: Oct. 15, 2015
The American Cancer Society<http://www.cancer.org/> has released a Request for Proposals designed to stimulate research that will generate new knowledge of the effects of the United States healthcare system structure and the role of insurance on both access to and outcomes of cancer screening, early detection, and treatment services. Studies investigating how one or more factors impacting access — including insurance status, costs, capacity, personal characteristics, provider characteristics, components of the healthcare delivery system, and other known factors — and outcomes interact are encouraged. Studies may be at the state, multi-state, or national levels, or otherwise involve large populations. If cross-sectional studies are proposed, analysis of both demographic and outcomes data (e.g., claims data linked with electronic health records, SEER data, state-level data, National Center for Health Statistics<http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/>, and other existing datasets) is preferred. Potential areas of investigation include but are not limited to how the structure and capacity of the healthcare system affect appropriate and timely access to cancer screening, early detection, treatment, and palliative care services; the provider and system factors that affect treatment patterns and quality of cancer care within the current healthcare systems; and the exploration of life course patterns of the entire spectrum of cancer care (from prevention and screening through diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and supportive/palliative care) by linking diverse data sources for broad patient populations. To be eligible, applicants must be affiliated with nonprofit institutions located in the United States, its territories, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; and be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident of the United States. Independent investigators at all stages of their career are encouraged to apply. Amount: Up to $200,000
