Dear CALS Faculty,

Neal Armstrong, Associate Vice President for Research, has requested faculty input in key areas related to analytics and informatics support at the UA, and mechanisms to foster collaboration between computation/information and domain science faculty for pursing new opportunities. Additional information is below.

This is an opportunity to provide viewpoints that can impact future research initiatives. Please consider contributing your perspective to the conversation.

Thanks.

Subject: Strategic Planning Workshop Follow Up
Importance: High

Sent on Behalf of Neal Armstrong

Colleagues,
At the end of the summer, the Office for Research & Discovery hosted a series of strategic planning workshops, Road mapping Retreats, in which two recurring theme emerged from several of the sessions: The need for improved analytics and informatics support at the UofA, and the need for mechanisms that foster collaborations between computation/information and domain science faculty for pursuing new opportunities.

With this in mind, we are requesting input from three broad UA communities:
(1) Computer Information Science and Engineering (CISE), Math/Statistics (Computer Science, MIS etc., Electrical Eng. etc. )
(2) Domain sciences (Bio/Life Sciences, Geosciences, Astronomy, Anthropology, Optics, etc.)
(3) Institutional/Departmental infrastructure provider. (Groups involved in supporting research computing)

The intention is to obtain and the collective point of view and community needs and distill them into a brief (2 page of less per community) document, that would be synthesized into a formal request for central support.

Realizing that meeting in person for these large communities is going to be challenging, we have created three open access google docs with some guidelines and suggestions for each group to contribute their ideas into.
1. CISE/Math/Statistics community page<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CKvyz8uSfDftP8ChSq0EQbIEULxO1_5My0gWT2v75QY/edit?usp=sharing>
2. Domain Sciences community page<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HnVzfE1sid06lNqXSMHRSYwdwc1gNTHQYqCnaP8yImg/edit?usp=sharing>
3. Institutional/Department infrastructure provider page<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ggewr6Xe5Wnkgb8mVfPJkj6Tzl_qK16TgQFFoy422RE/edit?usp=sharing>

Please provide your input by Dec. 14th 2015.

Thank you for your assistance,

Sincerely,

Neal Armstrong
Associate Vice President, Research
Office for Research & Discovery
