The NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program (15-504)<http://arizona.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b6ba9388f9c749678c5f1628d&id=10c94b1470&e=db7a664467> serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments that support research and research training. Proposals may request NSF support for either the acquisition (Track 1) or development (Track 2) of a single, well-integrated research instrument in the range of $100k to $4M, with cost sharing required at 30% of the total project cost. UA may submit up to three MRI proposals, but no more than two proposals may be for instrument acquisition.

Important dates:

  *   College/Institute review internal deadline:  On or about September 15, 2015. Please consult with your Dean’s/Director’s office for the specific date.
  *   Office for Research & Discovery (ORD) internal review deadline:  September 22, 2015.
  *   Sponsor deadline:  Full Application – January 13, 2016.
Interested faculty should submit a pre-proposal to their Dean/Director for referral to ORD by the internal review deadline. Pre-proposals will include:

  *   A two-page instrument description and rationale stating either acquisition (Track 1) or development (Track 2), which will include a description of:
     *   How the instrument will advance research and research training;
     *   Specific information about where the instrument will be located and how will access be provided, e.g., in a core facility;
     *   A business plan outline for operating and maintaining the instrument;
     *   How the proposal fits with the strategic emphasis of the respective College/Institute and UA;
     *   The competitive advantage of the proposal, regionally and nationally; and,
     *   The expertise and resources that the principal investigator and investigator team bring to the effort.
  *   A list of anticipated users and their active funding.
  *   A two-page biosketch of the principal investigator, including active funding.
  *   Cost sharing plan, including contributions confirmed from college, department, or other source, and request, if planned, for cost share from ORD.
Contributions to the cost share obligation normally come from both central units (e.g., ORD, interdisciplinary research institutes, and centers) and local units (e.g., college, department). Confirmation of unit contributions should be obtained prior to submission of the pre-proposal.
