Subject: NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program Limited Solicitation
Notice
The NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) program supports shared
instrument acquisition or development across all NSF funded areas of
science, mathematics and engineering. The 2015 MRI program solicitation
will be released in September. The previous announcement is available on
the NSF web site ( <http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5260>
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5260). Each proposal may
request funds from $100,000 to $4 million. UA may submit up to three
proposals, of which at least one must be for instrument development and no
more than two may be for instrument acquisition. Cost sharing is required
for 30% of the total project cost.
Important dates:
* College review internal deadline: On or about September 22, 2014.
Please consult with your Dean's office for specific date.
* Office for Research & Discovery (OR&D) internal review deadline:
September 29, 2014.
* Anticipated sponsor deadline: January 22, 2015.
Interested faculty should submit a pre-proposal to their Dean for referral
to the Office for Research by the internal review deadline. Pre-proposals
will include:
* A two-page description of and rationale for the equipment to be
acquired or developed which will include a description of:
o How the equipment will advance science;
o Specific information about where the equipment will be located, e.g. in
a core facility and how will access be provided;
o A sketch business plan for operating and maintaining the equipment;
o How the proposal fits with the strategic emphasis of the respective
College and the University;
o The competitive advantage of the proposal nationally; and,
o The expertise and resources that the principal investigator and
investigator team bring to the effort;
* A list of anticipated users and their active funding
* A biosketch (4 pages maximum) of the principal investigator,
including active funding
* Cost sharing plan, including contributions confirmed from college,
department, or other source and request, if any, of cost share from OR&D.
Contributions to the cost share obligation normally come from both central
units (e.g. OR&D, interdisciplinary research institutes and centers) and
local units (e.g. college, department). Confirmation of local contributions
should be obtained prior to submission of the pre-proposal.
