how those changes will impact the way people value and use wilderness; (4) explorations of the “relevancy” of wilderness, which is either related to long-standing relevancy that has not been emphasized or new relevancy emerging due to a changing society; and
5) studying new methods to assess whether proposed and existing wilderness management laws and policies advance equity and inclusion. </span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:106%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="xxxmsonormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt;line-height:106%"><span style="color:black">Federally designated wilderness areas, collectively, the National Wilderness Preservation System, are the most protected public lands in the United States. The first
wilderness area in America, the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, was created administratively by the Forest Service in 1924. In 1964, the United States Congress passed the Wilderness Act initially protecting 54 areas (9.1 million acres) as wilderness. Today,
the NWPS consists of 803 wilderness areas (111.7 million acres) across 44 states and Puerto Rico. Wilderness areas are overlayed upon the traditional homelands of American Indian Tribes and Alaska Natives. Consequently, today, wilderness is part national and
tribal identity and provides myriad benefits to all Americans from spiritual renewal and recreation opportunity, to clean air and water, wildlife habitat, and food and economic security. </span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:106%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="xxxmsonormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt;line-height:106%"><span style="color:black">The opening lines of the Wilderness Act state: “An Act to establish a National Wilderness Preservation System for the permanent good of the whole people…” Unfortunately,
as a nation, we haven’t, yet, met that ideal. There is a long history of removal of Native Americans and other people of color from lands that became wilderness. Today, there remains, if unintentional, both perceived and real barriers to wilderness access
for people of color and those from under resourced communities. Fortunately, there is a strong commitment in the wilderness community to understand and reconcile the past and change the future. The work of the forthcoming scientist at the Leopold Institute
will create one pathway toward understanding and managing wilderness for “…the permanent good of the whole people…” There’s a huge opportunity here to have a significant impact on the future of public lands management. </span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:106%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
