<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">Commission on the Status of Women hosted a Pay Equity Discussion today. Out of ~40 people, ALVSCE was well represented. As each of you know, this issue is causing angst among
our colleagues. I was humbled to attend and listen. The audience asked, including several people from CALS, what are colleges doing to monitor pay equity. I was surprised by this, as Dean Burgess has presented equity at multiple ‘State of the College’ presentations,
addressed concerns in ‘Dear Colleagues’ memos, and discussed our efforts with unit and shared governance leaders.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">The fact that there were so many questions suggests communications surrounding this issue are very important. Please discuss this information with your colleagues.

<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">Equity Review in ALVSCE<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">ALVSCE has performed an
<a href="https://compass.arizona.edu/dbs/policies/compensation-adjustments">equity analysis</a> annually since 2014 due to a request from Dean Burgess. To my knowledge, ALVSCE is the only college/division at the UA that regularly, and in documented fashion,
performs such a review. </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">The review process has incrementally improved through annual conversations with HR, faculty groups within CALS, and other appropriate groups at UA. Admittedly, it is not perfect
but continues to get better. It is based on the US Supreme Court’s definition of equity, which use a statistical test to demonstrate inequitable pay at a significant level.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">After our analysis identifies potential inequity, we contact the Unit Head for further investigation. Those cases found to be inequitable result in salary adjustments.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
