Dear Directors,

Jeff Ratje sent this email on September 28, looking for input from all ALVSCE units, including our county offices. They have received information from La Paz, Maricopa, Pima, WRRC, and the 4-H program - thank you all.

The details are in the email below. If you have nothing to report to Jeff, please send him an email stating that. This way, he knows he has received everyone's input.

I appreciate your getting back to him soon.

Thanks,

Ed

Dear ALVSCE Leaders,

The ALVSCE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council is collecting statements from unit leaders like yourself on actions, activities, and events that occurred within your unit last year that create a culture of DEI. DEI is an important ingredient within the division's foundational goal<https://alvsce.arizona.edu/about/strategy/foundational-strategic-intent> of being the most sought after place to be a part of, and it is a core value<https://www.arizona.edu/purpose-mission-values/inclusion> for the institution.

As a leader within ALVSCE, you set a positive tone for the climate within the division. We look to you for inspiration and leadership, which create a culture that welcomes everyone.

Please answer the following question and return to me by October 24. The goal is to have one slide per unit. Please think broadly about DEI and how it affects the lived experiences of our faculty, staff, and students; languages and cultures; our identities; and diversity of thought. If you have a DEI Committee, please include your chair in the development of your response.

The collected statements will be included in a slide show shown in the Forbes Lobby and on the ALVSCE DEI website. Please consider the audience of students, faculty, and staff when responding. Short, bullet point responses are best.

What 3 to 5 actions, activities, or events have you facilitated in the last year that best demonstrate your commitment to DEI?

Example:

Last year, I/we created a culture of DEI (please limit to your top 3-5 responses):

  * Sponsored the creation of a DEI Council within the unit.
  * Hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month family event.
  * Working with the Dean of Students, created a 1-credit course to help student-veterans build peer networks and acclimate to college life.
  * Added a Spanish language option to our main departmental website.
  * Fundraised with ALVSCE Development to establish an endowed scholarship for first generation students in our department.
  * Adopted the Juntos 4-H curriculum for our county's 4-H programming.
  * Created a handbook for faculty to help them create residential summer field camps that offer safe and inclusive learning and research environments. Improves the safety and inclusion of female and LGBTQ+ grad students that participate in field research.
  * 100% of faculty and staff completed the anti-harassment and discrimination trainings.
  * Participated in the Strategic Priorities Faculty Initiative (SPFI) that led to the hire of a diverse faculty position.
  * Increased outreach and recruitment activities to underserved high schools that yielded a 4% increase in the number of undergraduate students who identify as Hispanic.
  *   I personally attended 3 DEI events.
  * Established a women faculty mentorship group in the unit.
  * Installed a lactation space in the building.

Thank you for all you do to create a positive culture within ALVSCE.

Jeff
