[CED/CD/EAT] UArizona Mask Requirements

Just a footnote to share related to my mention of the Az Water Association Research Symposium. I just received word that they are postponing it until sometime in March at the earliest. It took them a while to get there.
The University is still planning to start classes in person. Many universities are doing otherwise.

I guess we will have plenty to talk about on our Tuesday call. I am schedule to speak that morning at Az Water Association’s Research Symposium. Apparently, I am the only speaker who is wanting to speak remotely.
I am passing on a concern about which Ethan is also aware. In discussing the new masking requirements for those in the WRRC’s building, Arizona Project WET Director Holly Thomas-Hilburn wrote: “I’d be interested to hear if there’s any discussion amongst CEDs or other extension leadership about employees feeling uncomfortable in situations where other are not masked when not on university property and how to handle that. I’m personally nervous about some of the classroom situations our team is working in right now with 30+ unmasked students.”
It is unfortunate that things have taken a turn in the wrong direction. Let’s hope this backsliding is short-lived.

Don,
As I read it, surgical masks are fine.

Do we really need to use the higher-grade masks? The guideline says surgical masks or higher-grade masks. So I think the surgical masks are still fine. Or am I wrong?

We’ve been doing some research here this morning about this since we received the email from Ratje. The concern I have about this is the cost (we did order some yesterday before we got the email and found them on Amazon for about $46 for 20 masks). The KN95 masks (and the others) can only be used 3 times with cleaning (there are limited cleaning options - only 4 that I found and none that I have the supplies for – so we have to build in that cost). I know Facilities is supposed to have these available (if it’s anything like the earlier PPE orders we had to wait months for delivery), but if we have to provide this this is going to end up being a big cost to all of us. Dear Directors,
By now, most of you have heard that the UA is now requiring employees to “wear a surgical- or higher-grade mask (KN95, N95, KF94, and N99) in indoor spaces at all campus locations.”
If you can purchase masks locally, please do so and use them. Like the cloth ones we are using now, these masks should be worn when six feet of continuous physical distancing cannot be maintained.
If you need assistance in ordering masks, contact Kristie, and she will help you.
Regards,
Ed
