Message from the State AZ 4-H Program Leader
Greetings Arizona 4-H Volunteers,
This past week I have had the opportunity to visit the Coconino and Apache County Fairs and the Navajo Nation 4-H Resiliency Show. And,if that was enough I got to visit Gila County Livestock Skill-A-Thon. At every one of these events there were certified volunteers working to create high-quality positive youth development opportunities for, and with, 4-H youth members.
As we are in the middle of Fall fair season it is a good reminder that the youth is the project and the animal is the tool. At the Navajo Nation 4-H Show livestock sale each youth shared what they wanted to be when they grow up, and 4-H youth shared that they wanted to be a Marine, radiologist, scientest, educator, and pilot among others. When we discuss a young persons spark, the project work that they complete in 4-H may not have direct connection to their career objectives, but the 4-H experience builds self confidence, personal responsibility, and faith that they can contribute to society. Of course, we also value the content education that we instill in a youth through the project work and hope that the youth grows in their knowledge from being a novice to having mastery through their 4-H work.
Sometimes youth want to turn their spark into mastery, and that starts with finding their learning opportunity within 4-H, like the 4-H youth in Coconino County who were raising and showing camels (yes, camels!). The Camel Showmanship champions joined into the Round Robin, too. I appreciate the willingness of volunteers and show organizers to support a youth spark. The great thing about 4-H is that a youth can have a spark in rubics cube, raising an animal, or welding and explore all of them. Thank you to the volunteers who foster that exploration by saying "sure, I will lead that!"
In this month's newsletter there are opportunities for you to support youth sparks, and of course how to engage youth (and families) in good brainstorming activities.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Elliott-Engel

As we engage 4-H Youth Members
As we engage 4-H youth in the Do – Reflect - Apply process, there are lots of times when we need to come up with ideas. Project planning and problem solving are the two that come to mind immediately, but reflection and application also benefit from creating new ideas. People commonly call the task of coming up with ideas Brainstorming. And the name Brainstorming suggests that anything goes. But there are actually some ways to make your brainstorming sessions more productive, adapted to younger participants, and also fun! Find out more about good brainstorming for 4-H Club meetings here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/4845fd/s3cj3mp/4ki44j).
